We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

This specialist team works with children and young people with complex needs, helping them achieve positive, lasting change and lead lives free from offending. You’ll collaborate with passionate professionals in a high-quality service committed to restorative justice and asset-based approaches that empower families and communities.

As part of the Youth Justice team, you’ll work directly with children, young people, and their families to deliver targeted interventions that address offending behaviours and to reduce further reoffending.

You will carry out high quality assessments, court reports, case management, and documentation in line with national and local standards. Working closely with colleagues in the Adolescent Safeguarding team (REACH) and a range of partner agencies, you will design and deliver personalised support packages for Out of Court Resolutions, Referral Orders, and other relevant pathways.

A strong commitment to restorative approaches is essential ensuring victims’ needs are central to the process. You’ll also make effective use of community assets to support sustainable positive change and offer a targeted ‘step down’ approach where appropriate.

About you:

We are looking for someone with the skills and passion to support vulnerable adolescents in this vital Youth Justice High Risk worker role.

Ideally, you will be a qualified social worker, probation officer, or Youth Justice professional. However, we also welcome applicants with a professional or academic background in a related field.

You are someone with a proven track record of working with children and young people, who understands the challenges they face and can build strong, positive relationships with them, their families, and colleagues. You consistently put children at the heart of your work and can demonstrate an understanding of the youth justice system, traumainformed practice, and contextual safeguarding.

You can balance the demands of a busy caseload, develop meaningful intervention plans, write court reports, and work effectively with families and partner agencies. You’ll be confident advocating for children in court and in professional meetings, work well as part of a team, and be committed to your own ongoing development.

A driving licence or ability to travel effectively is needed, and flexibility to work evenings to meet the needs of children and families is essential.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

Join Wigan’s Youth Justice team, part of the REACH Service within Children and Families, and make a real difference. We work with young people with complex needs, helping them achieve positive, lasting change and lead lives free from offending. You’ll collaborate with passionate professionals in a high-quality, specialist service. We offer flexible working patterns and a blended approach across home, office, and community.
