What skills and experience we're looking for
Transforming the life chances of children in Torbay begins with exceptional teachers and subject leaders.
At Torquay Academy, we are building a team united by a shared belief: everyone succeeds. We believe every student who joins us is capable of progressing to university or an equally aspirational future, and we design our curriculum, systems and culture around that conviction.
We are seeking a Head of Photography to lead and develop Photography within our Creative Arts faculty from September 2026. The ability to teach Photography to A level is essential, alongside the ability to teach Photography and/or Art at GCSE, and Art at Key Stage 3.
The role:
As Head of Photography, you will provide subject leadership within a highly collaborative Creative Arts faculty that includes Art, Photography, Drama, Music and Music Technology. You will be responsible for shaping a high-quality curriculum, supporting student outcomes at GCSE and A level, and contributing to the wider creative life of the Academy.
This role would suit:
• An experienced teacher ready to take on subject leadership, or
• An established subject leader seeking a new challenge in a purpose-driven school
Why Photography matters at Torquay Academy
Photography plays a powerful role in developing creativity, confidence and visual literacy. Our students benefit from a strong Key Stage 3 foundation, healthy GCSE uptake and an established A level Photography pathway.
Student work is celebrated through high-profile exhibitions and events, alongside a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities that bring creativity to life across the Academy.
What it’s like to work at Torquay Academy
We believe great teaching and leadership flourish in calm, purposeful environments. Teachers are supported by strong, centralised behaviour systems and a highly effective pastoral team, allowing leaders to focus on curriculum quality and impact.
We actively reduce unnecessary workload and invest in staff through:
• High-quality, evidence-informed CPD
• 1-to-1 instructional coaching
• Leadership development opportunities
You will work alongside like-minded colleagues who are ambitious for young people and proud of the difference they make.
Is this role right for you?
If you believe that every child can succeed, that subject leadership matters, and that creative education can transform lives, we would warmly encourage you to apply.
What the school offers its staff
Staff benefits
• Free laptop for school and home use
• Priority admission for secondary places
• Free gym membership for you and your family
• Cycle to Work scheme
Commitment to safeguarding
Torquay Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment. All successful candidates will be subject to Disclosure and Barring checks along with other relevant employment checks.
