Summary
Neway International are seeking a Street Lighting Engineer to join our client based with Camden Council.
Location: 5 Pancras Square, London
Hours: 36 per week
PAYE: £27.63 per hour
Limited/Umbrella: £36.16 per hour
About the Client
Camden Council’s Highways Team plays a vital role in maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable public infrastructure across the borough. The Street Lighting function is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of public lighting systems, ensuring residents, businesses, and visitors benefit from safe and well‑lit streets. This vacancy has arisen to provide essential cover while permanent recruitment is underway.
The Role
The Street Lighting Engineer will take responsibility for the professional, customer‑focused management of Camden’s street lighting service. This includes overseeing maintenance and installation works, managing contractors, ensuring compliance with legislation, and contributing to the strategic development of public lighting systems.
The role also involves supporting the out‑of‑hours highway emergency service and ensuring accurate financial and asset management.
Key Responsibilities
Manage the maintenance and installation of public lighting across the highway network.
Monitor workflow and maintain a regular, efficient work programme.
Ensure all works meet required specifications and safety standards.
Support and manage the out‑of‑hours highway emergency service, ensuring adequate cover.
Supervise external contractors and ensure high‑quality service delivery.
Take responsibility for financial management of public lighting budgets.
Liaise with the Asset Management team to maintain accurate asset records.
Ensure compliance with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
Prepare reports, correspondence, and responses to enquiries and complaints.
Represent the Street Lighting Team at committees, public meetings, and consultations.
Manage capital and revenue budgets, forecasts, and contingency planning.
Contribute to service planning, resource management, and continuous improvement.
Candidate Requirements
Substantial experience in highway maintenance, particularly public lighting.
Experience providing highway emergency service support.
Strong knowledge of the New Roads and Street Works Act, Highways Act, and Traffic Management Act.
Understanding of Health & Safety legislation and CDM Regulations.
Experience managing contractors and supervising technical staff.
Proven ability to make accurate, informed decisions.
Strong IT skills and familiarity with relevant software.
Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
Local government experience is desirable.
Full driving licence required.
Ability to work flexibly, including out‑of‑hours emergency response.
