Crynodeb
his is a 40- bedded unit which opened in June 2001 as part of the reconfiguration of neurosciences services across Greater Manchester. There is a possibility that the number of beds may be increased to 50 in the near future. It offers post-acute neurorehabilitation for patients all over Greater Manchester.
Patients have a variety of neurological impairments arising from acquired brain injury to other neurological conditions. Some will have received their acute treatment at the Neurosciences Centre at Salford Royal Hospital prior to transfer to the INRU for ongoing neurorehabilitation. In addition, patients will also be transferred onto the unit from other hospitals and the community .
There are three part-time Consultant posts attached to the INRU as well as a full-time specialty doctor. There is also a full specialist multidisciplinary team based on the unit.
There are several clinical fellows plus registrars in training. The unit receives approximately 80-100 patients per year, with the outpatient patient number being approximately 400-500 per year.
The Neurorehabilitation Unit was selected for National Clinical Governance Project 2002 onwards
The unit aims to provide holistic specialist multidisciplinary rehabilitation for all patients. The appointee will be expected to work closely as part of the integrated multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, psychologists and social workers on unit.
On the Nuerorehabilitation Unit the appointee will provide medical support for the in-patient . In addition, there may be some input to specialist outpatient clinics.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the clinical research conducted within the department.
The appointee will have the opportunity to develop their teaching skills. The nurses and allied health professionals have extensive teaching input on the unit.
The approximate distribution of these duties over the standard 10 sessions (40hour week) shared with existing clinical fellows. There is also a specialist registrar on rotation on the unit.
