The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have an exciting opportunity for aLocum Neonatal/General Paediatric Consultant to come and join our dynamic and enthusiastic team at GWH for 6 months on a 9PA contract.
This role will predominantly be focused on Neonatology (including service weeks and on calls) but also includes some General Paediatric commitments, including General Paediatric/Neonatal clinics and Paediatric Assessment Unit work, with the opportunity to develop other specialty interest areas.
The appointed candidate(s) will join an existing team of senior medical staff including Consultants. The locum position is part of the Neonatal team and is for 6 months.
We are really committed to finding the right people, and supporting their career development for the long term. Swindon is a great place to work, with a very supportive exec team, and beautiful villages in the surrounding countryside to live!
This is a 9PA locum consultant post but if you would like to discuss other job plan options please get in touch as we are keen to support flexible working. As a Neonatal Consultant you will be responsible for service provision on a consultant of the week basis for 6.5 weeks per year. There is also a responsibility to provide dedicated cover for the transitional care unit and postnatal ward, again, on a consultant of the week basis, and to act as a second on consultant for the neonatal unit during busy periods. During that week you will also provide consultant support for the neonatal outreach team and any fetal medicine consultations needed.
On the other weeks you will have outpatient clinics, including neonatal follow up and general paediatrics. During your SPA time there is an expectation that you will support perinatal governance, quality improvement, research and education across our perinatal services. We would look to support you in developing your professional management and leadership skills, as well as other areas of interest.
Our STAR values are at the heart of everything we do. You can expect to see them in the way we act and the way we treat each other. Our values make us who we are. We will expect your values and behaviours
to reflect the STAR Values of the organisation:
Service We will put our patients first
Teamwork We will work together
Ambition We will aspire to provide the best service

Clinical Duties
The post holder is required to hold a CCT or equivalent. As such the post holder should be trained in all aspects of general paediatrics and neonatology. A special interest (SPIN) in Neonatology is essential. Any other special interests will be discussed as to how they may fit into the department and will be supported as much as possible.
• Participation in out of hours consultant cover for the neonatal unit on a rota (Approximately 1:8 weekdays, 1:8 weekends). On-call responsibilities will involve multidisciplinary team working across the perinatal service.
• Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
• There is no on-site PICU but patients are stabilised in the ED or on the adult ICU whilst awaiting retrieval with support from the anaesthetic department. Where the patient is a critically unwell baby (as a guide, under 3 months of age), the neonatal team will provide critical care skills and support for stabilisation prior to retrieval by the regional Paediatric Intensive Care WATCh team.
• Undertaking ward rounds around the neonatal unit and transitional care unit daily, aiming, where possible, for these ward rounds to be done in partnership with the baby(ie)s parents.
