Specialty Doctor – Lambeth Crisis Services - Home Treatment Team and Crisis Outreach Service, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Applications are invited for an experienced Specialty doctor to join Lambeth crisis services (Lambeth Home Treatment Team & Lambeth Crisis Outreach Service). Lambeth crisis services cater for adults (18 to 65 years old) with severe mental illness who are living within the borough. This is a full-time fixed-term post currently based at Lambeth hospital working across Lambeth Home Treatment Team (HTT) and Lambeth Crisis Outreach Service (COS). It is 9am-5pm with no on-call responsibilities although you are more than welcome to contribute to the gaps in the junior doctor rota and will be compensated for doing so. This is a well-established role and is becoming available as the current incumbent is moving on to commence training post.
All the services in Lambeth Hospital will be relocated to different Trust sites in the autumn 2026. At that point this post will move along with the staff of HTT & COS to 308 Brixton Road.
You will have one day a week allocated for supporting professional activities.
A full induction programme will be offered.
The post will be initially for a period of 6 months with possibility of extension beyond this.
Specialty Doctor with Lambeth Home Treatment Team and Lambeth Crisis Outreach Service will provide psychiatric medical input to patients with Lambeth HTT and patients being assessed by Lambeth COS. The post holder will be part of the wider medical provision for both teams which includes two consultant psychiatrists, a higher trainee shared with an inpatient ward, a CT and another specialty doctor. The post holder will be involved in the assessment and management of adults who are of a clinical and risk profile requiring HTT follow up or COS assessment. Patients typically present with an acute mental disorder and associated vulnerabilities with risk to themselves or others.

1. To provide medical and psychiatric advice to Lambeth HTT & COS under supervision of the consultant psychiatrists
2. To initiate a psychiatric assessment, including mental state examination on first contact with the patient, and to regularly update the mental state examination.
3. To ensure that a physical examination of all patients when indicated
4. To maintain adequate written documentation of all medical and psychiatric examination of the patients and to record contacts with relatives and carers and their outcomes. Clear diagnostic and treatment plans should be formulated and recorded, and a comprehensive case workup should be available within 24 hours of admission.
5. To maintain adequate communication of medical activities.
6. To maintain a professional and ethical stance towards the patients, their relatives, other team members and other agencies.
7. To acquire knowledge of and competence in legal framework including the Mental Health Act 1983/2007 and Mental Capacity Act 2005.
8. To acquire competence in basic psychotherapeutic techniques and attend supervision sessions.
9. Clinical supervision by a consultant psychiatrist will take place on a regular basis, with regular feedback.
