Crynodeb

We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible and welcome applications from all sections of the community wishing to join an organisation which values everyone.

We are the Environment Agency. We create better places for people, wildlife and the environment. We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.

This is an exciting opportunity within the Environment Agency’s Acoustics and Air Quality Modelling and Assessment Unit (AQMAU).

As an acoustics technical officer, you will work in a team of other professionals to review and interpret BS 4142 noise impact assessments using predictive modelling software and analysis tools. This will include carrying out complex modelling studies, writing technical reports, developing analysis tools and providing advice and training to colleagues across the organisation.

You will work closely with other members of the AQMAU team, providing technical expertise to support permitting decisions.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment, and full training will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

You will join a dispersed team of experts. The AQMAU team provides the Environment Agency’s national air dispersion and noise modelling expertise. We provide regulatory advice to support permitting and compliance. We also engage with industry to improve application quality. You’ll be part of a team sharing skills and experience to deliver the best outcomes for people and the environment. The work we do impacts on permitting decisions and how a site can legally operate.

Experience/skills required

You will have:

A minimum of degree level or equivalent in acoustics or a related science or engineering discipline
Experience in acoustics and noise modelling gained through regulatory, consultancy or industry roles
A proven ability to analyse data and solve problems to make decisions
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and accessible way
Strong interpersonal and team-working skills
Excellent customer focus
You’ll be comfortable managing your own work and communicating complex technical issues effectively. Membership with a relevant professional organisation such as the Institute of Acoustics is desirable.
