Here at Sheffield Hallam University we are seeking a Technician with expertise in analytical chemistry associated techniques to provide specialist technical support, enabling researchers and students to access the full value of the excellent equipment in our analytical facilities.

In this role you would be directly involved in supporting laboratory-based activities including under-graduate and post-graduate student research projects, other practical teaching, research and innovation activities. You will work closely with team members to achieve this and support a range of areas of the University - the team section below details the areas we support. The key focus of this post is analytical chemistry, mainly within the School of Biosciences and Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre. Our students experience sector-leading access to state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation. As a Technical Specialist you will have an important role in day-to-day management of the area and you will support the development of colleagues.

Laboratory and chemical safety knowledge is essential. You will also need to have in-depth practical experience and knowledge of chemical / biochemical analysis instrumentation and techniques, with proficiency gained from your hands-on experience with calibration, maintenance tasks, method development and troubleshooting. Examples of relevant techniques include HPLC, FPLC, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, Raman spectrometry, ICP, NMR, FTIR, and spectrophotometric/plate reader assays.

A background in analytical chemistry, and knowledge and experience of a wide range of the techniques listed above, would be an advantage. However, it is more important to have the aptitude and enthusiasm to learn new techniques and to train and support our students to use them. You will be expected to work flexibly and have, or develop, skills to allow you to support the team’s delivery across a range of disciplines. You will be highly motivated and meticulous in your work, with a professional work ethic, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively across team boundaries sharing knowledge and skills to ensure customer-focussed results.

We offer a diverse range of benefits and opportunities to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career in a supportive environment.

You will be contractually enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) – one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country.
