Clothes Alterations, Machinist & Tailor (Self-Employed)

Location: Brixton, SW9
Hours: 10–20 hrs per week (flexible schedule)
Pay: Competitive — weekly by invoice

About the Role

We’re looking for a skilled, dependable alterations machinist to join our busy Brixton studio. This role is ideal for someone confident in high-quality garment alterations who can also lend a hand with upcoming production work — from precise stitching to finishing and quality control.

You’ll be part of a small, professional team known for excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

Perform high-quality alterations: hems, zips, sleeve and waist adjustments, darts, linings, etc.

Assist on production sewing — handling larger orders with speed and accuracy.

Confidently work with structured and delicate fabrics (wool, silk, velvet, cotton, etc.).

Maintain tidy, well-organised work areas and uphold studio quality standards.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum 3 years’ proven experience in professional alterations or tailoring.

Skilled on industrial machines (straight stitch, overlocker, coverstitch) and strong hand-finishing.

Able to switch between alterations and production sewing confidently.

Reliable, focused, and takes pride in delivering beautiful results.

Friendly, punctual, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

This role suits a competent, hands-on professional, not someone seeking “experience” or testing the waters.
If your background is primarily academic or fashion-based without real alterations experience, this won’t be the right fit.

Trial & Start

A short 1-hour in-studio trial will be arranged to assess workmanship.
Feedback is immediate, and successful candidates can start straight away.

Why Join Us

Supportive, creative, female-led studio

Flexible, self-employed schedule

Weekly invoice payments

Opportunity to work on both boutique alterations and larger production runs
