Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Staff Nurse to join the dedicated team in The Lilac Centre, award winning chemotherapy day unit.
Due to the success of the unit, we are expanding the team and currently plan to be providing services across 7 days of the week. The current operating hours are 8am -8pm Monday to Friday but will be gradually extended over time to accommodate clinics on Saturdays and Sundays. We are looking for people with an interest in chemotherapy and cancer who have a flexible approach to work and who possess excellent interpersonal and organisation skills, to work alongside our medical oncology and haematology teams.

The role involves administering chemotherapy and other cancer treatments, promoting awareness and education of oncology issues and supporting patients and their families during a critical time in their cancer care.
You will be supported by experienced chemotherapy nurses and training will be given to suit the needs of the successful applicant. The permanent contract will provide you with an opportunity to gain new skills and experience within a busy chemotherapy day unit.
Applications are invited from Registered Nurses with the following:
• 6 months post-registration experience and / or experience in oncology/haematology nursing
• ENB 998 or equivalent
• Evidence of cancer related study
• Chemotherapy qualification is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.

KEY DUTIES
Develop and expand scope of professional practice to include venepuncture, cannulation, administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy and management of central venous lines in line with NMC and Trust Policies.
To consistently organise and deliver individualised patient care, ensuring patient’s physical, social and psychological needs are met.
To contribute to the maintenance and development of evidence based clinical standards.
To maintain contemporaneous nursing records in accordance with Trust and NMC guidance.
To participate in the review of existing methods of nursing care via benchmarking and audit and the implementation of necessary changes.
Keep up to date with developments in the care and treatment of cancer patients in order to be able to carry out duties completely and efficiently.
To communicate effectively and work in partnership with patients, their relatives/carers, nursing colleagues and members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure care is delivered in an accurate and efficient manner.
Acknowledge any personal limitations of competence in accordance with the ‘NMC Code of Professional Conduct’ (2008).
Develop knowledge of the hazards to staff, patients, relatives and the environment with regard to administration, disposal and spillage of cytotoxic chemotherapy, taking appropriate action.
Supervise professional work of nursing staff, including junior staff.
CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain Professional Registration
Adhere to relevant Code of Practice of the Nursing and Midwifery Council
Adhere to the Trust policies and protocols
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
To ensure that all patient information is confidential and is not disclosed to a third party except with permission of the Nurse in Charge
To keep patient records up to date on a day to day basis following any interaction with patients/relatives
To ensure all unit documentation is completed
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES
To assist with induction programmes, preceptorship and mentorship of new staff as appropriate.
To appropriately assist in the promotion of the learning environment. Participating in the supervision and assessment of Health Care Assistants, Student Nurses, Return to Practice Nurses, Overseas registered Nurses and Cadets, as appropriate.
To take responsibility for personal study and development in accordance with ‘NMC Post Registration Education and Practice’.
To undertake appropriate nursing role developments and fully engage in ones own appraisal/performance review.
To mentor registered nurses undertaking the chemotherapy course when competent to do so
LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
To regularly take charge of the clinical are in the absence of a senior member of staff
Participate in meetings pertinent to the Unit
Establish and maintain good communication within the Unit, Division, Trust and agencies outside the Trust.
To consistently use resources efficiently.
To be actively involves in risk management and clinic audit programmes.
To ensure safe custody of patients property.
To be responsible for ensuring all patients and their relatives/carers are kept fully informed of patient’s treatment/progress and discharge plans/after care.
To report all accidents, hazards, incidents and complaints in accordance with Trust policies and assist in investigation of them as required.
Comply with Health and Safety polices.
