MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: TRAINING AND EDUCATION To take a lead in an agreed area of neonatal care and facilitate this in the service development. To act as a resource and supervisor to all staff working within the area. To act as a mentor/preceptor/supervisor to students and other learners. To promote an environment that is conducive to quality learning and assessment. Maintain own continuing professional development needs in education, research, clinicand leadership skills. Develop and maintain competence in the additional skills related to the needs of the children, particularly those with differing needs. To undertake air transfer training and participate in off island transfers as required following a period of training and consolidation. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES To be professionally accountable and to recognise own limitations of work and practice within the NMC Code of Conduct. To be responsible for the assessment and planning, implementation and evaluation of care, in negotiation with the family adapting to the individual needs of the infant. To attend labour ward and competently assist in the resuscitation and stabilisation of a newborn. To act as an advocate for the child and their family ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services. To take responsibility for a defined group of patients. To guide, advice, and direct other staff in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient/client care. To lead a team of staff in emergency and other acute situations, ensuring that the patients/clients needs are met and that significant others are supported. To utilise information and data from a range of sources to identify patient problems and guide decision-making processes. Within field of expertise and organisational policy, request specific clinical tests to establish a diagnosis. To promote service user involvement in the planning, delivery and evaluation of care, respecting their wishes, beliefs and dignity. To promote an open and trusting relationship by communicating effectively with service users, members of the multidisciplinary team and other agencies involved in the care of the patient/client. To contribute to the continuing development of the Special Care Unit. Participate in the internal rotation of day and night shifts within the unit. To help paediatric nurses/ take a patient load on Frossard ward at times when the SCU patient load is minimal. Work in partnership with Frossard Ward staff during busy periods Support paediatric nurses who are helping in SCU at times of high pressure. LEADERSHIP/MANAGERIAL To contribute to the recruitment and retention of team members. To coordinate a team of staff, ensuring that clear systems of communication are developed within the team and any work-related issues raised by the team are addressed. To ensure the implantation of the organisations objectives, policies and procedures and the implications for their practice. To assist in the development and review of policies, guidelines, protocols and procedures. To undertake the professional development review process with identified team members. Support staff with performance issues developing action plans to address developmental needs. To act as a professional role model for junior staff, promoting high standards of practice and strong professional values. To assist with shift planning for the practice area including the efficient use of Bank and Agency staff. Promote the safety of the ward and the risk management process, by participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues and incident reporting. To attend and participate in Special Care Unit and other relevant meetings Maintain a safe environment by ensuring that equipment is checked, clinical areas prepared for patients, faulty equipment is reported and withdrawn from service until repaired and that staff perform in a professional manner at all times. COMMUNICATION To communicate effectively with patient/clients and their significant others, considering their cultural background and cognitive functioning. To communicate clearly with all members of the multidisciplinary team, demonstrating sensitivity to cultural and language differences. To promote open and trusting relationships by communicating effectively with service users, members of the multidisciplinary team and other agencies involved in the care of the neonate. To manage conflict between individuals, including staff, patients/clients and their significant others. To ensure written communication complies with organisational and professional standards. AUDIT/INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/RESEARCH ACTIVITY In conjunction with the audit department, initiate and undertake clinical audits to monitor and maintain standards or practice and present findings through presentations. To utilise the critical incident reporting system to document actual or potential risks impacting on the quality of patient care. To actively promote evidence-based practice in own and the practice of other members of staff involved in the care of the patient/client. With training, access organisational electronic information systems relevant to the role. REVALIDATION In accordance with States of Guernsey legislation and the HSC procedure the Registration of Health and Social Care Professionals (COR001), all nurses and midwives who are States of Guernsey employees, contractors, agency workers or in any other capacity are practising as a nurse or midwife are required to have effective registration with the (UK)Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). In order to maintain effective registration with the NMC you must adhere to the Council's requirements for Revalidation. You must proactively manage all aspects of your Revalidation requirements including keeping an up to date portfolio and proactively seeking out opportunities for reflection, continuing education and professional growth. You must be proactive and cooperative in the appraisal and confirmer processes You must assist colleagues with relevant aspects of their Revalidation. This includes but is not limited to teaching, providing support and opportunities for Facilitated Reflective Practice, participating in professional discussions and providing constructive feedback. Depending on your level of experience and seniority the organisation may also require you to act as a Confirmer. If you are unable to meet any aspect of the Revalidation requirements or this element of your Job Description or you require additional support it is your responsibility to escalate this immediately to an appropriate senior nurse or midwife.
