Looking to kick start a career in media, PR, or digital communications while making a real difference in Greater Manchester?

The Group Communications Apprenticeship is an exciting way to start a career in communications. You’ll be working in three organisations that have a direct impact on the people and communities of Greater Manchester.

Your Role

During the apprenticeship, you’ll get involved in all the different things our busy communications teams deliver from creating content for social media channels like Instagram and TikTok, to arranging events and working with newspapers and websites like the Manchester Evening News.

You’ll be trained and supported by one of our Communication Managers and work mainly with the team at TfGM. But, as we’re part of one group, you’ll get hands on experience at all three workplaces, meaning lots of variety and never a dull moment!

Who are we?

You’ll get first hand experience of working as part of the communications teams for:

  • Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) the organisation that runs the Bee Network, the joined-up public transport system including buses and trams
  • Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) - made up of the ten Greater Manchester councils and Mayor, Andy Burnham, who work together to improve the city-region
  • Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) - one of the largest fire and rescue services in England

This level 4 apprenticeship is a great fit for those who are:

  • Interested in writing and have good attention to detail in their written work
  • Have considered a career working in something related to media, TV, social media or politics
  • Want a varied job where they can put their creativity to good use writing copy, creating social content and coming up with interesting ideas.
  • Like meeting new people from different backgrounds with varying experiences
  • Are enthusiastic and like working closely on projects with other people
  • Want a mixture of desk-based work as well as getting out and about away from the office
  • Take an interest in the latest trends in the media and on social media
  • Are interested in how decisions are made that shape our communities and public services
  • Recognise the benefits that good public transport, cycling and walking routes can deliver


What we can offer you

You don’t have to have lots of knowledge or any prior experience in communications for this role. It’s a great way to build your skills with a friendly team who will support you as you develop. Completing this apprenticeship could go on to jobs such as a Communications Assistant/Officer in the public sector or an Account Executive at a PR agency.

This is an 18 month fixed term level 4 apprenticeship with a starting salary of £26,744 per annum. It’s a great opportunity to earn while you learn getting valuable workplace experience, and a dedicated mentor who will support you through your studies.
