Coastal Maintenance Officer
Salary: £25,583 pro rata per annum (Grade 10, SCP 5)
Contract: Fixed Term, Part Time (22.5 hours per week until 31st March 2026)
Location: Coastal Maintenance Workshop, other locations as required.
About the Role
An opportunity has arisen within the Coastal and Commercial Services team for a Coastal Services Officer.
This hands-on role supports the Coastal Operations Officer in maintaining Hastings’ seafront, promenade, and foreshore to the highest standards of safety and presentation. You’ll carry out inspections and maintenance, ensure accurate record-keeping, and work with partners to deliver safe, efficient, and well-presented coastal spaces for residents and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out routine and responsive inspections of coastal land and assets.
Undertake maintenance, decoration, and repair works as required.
Maintain accurate records of all works to meet health and safety requirements.
Support the monitoring of service resources, equipment, and materials.
Work collaboratively with other Council departments and external agencies such as the Environment Agency, RNLI, and Rother District Council.
Provide excellent customer service when dealing with public enquiries.
Deputise for the Coastal Operations Officer when required.
Ensure all work is completed in line with health and safety, equality, and environmental standards.
About You
We’re looking for a practical, reliable, and motivated individual who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in their work. You’ll be confident using tools and equipment, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and flexible with your working hours, including weekends and Bank Holidays.
Essential Requirements
Good standard of English.
Full, clean UK driving licence.
Experience in outdoor or coastal operational work.
Good knowledge of general maintenance, carpentry, and use of hand/power tools.
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and problem-solve.
