Counselling Centre Manager

0.89 FTE / 31.15 Hours per week

Grade 7 – Starting from £34,041.61 (pro-rata of £38,249) depending on qualifications and experience, rising by yearly increments to a maximum of £42,882 per annum.

While this is a hybrid role, regular on-campus presence is essential to meet service requirements.

Who we’re looking for:

In this dynamic and varied role, you’ll manage day-to-day operations, oversee clinical work, supervise trainees and staff, and deliver high-quality counselling to students. You’ll lead on maintaining clinical excellence, fostering collaboration, and ensuring students receive timely, effective, and compassionate support. Working with students presenting with complex or high-risk needs, you’ll develop triage pathways, manage high-risk cases, and streamline processes to boost efficiency and reach. You’ll also implement quality assurance measures and lead the development of an associate’s programme to strengthen service capacity.

You’ll bring substantial clinical experience, a deep understanding of student mental health, and the ability to lead and inspire others. Experience in supervision and service development is essential, along with a commitment to inclusive, student-centred care.

You will have:

• Experience providing counselling in a higher education or student-focused setting

• Ability to design, implement, and manage an associate’s programme to support service capacity

• Knowledge of a range of therapeutic approaches (e.g., CBT, person-centred, integrative approaches)

• The ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritise based on student need

• An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection in a student context

• Flexibility to work in person on campus as required and participate in wellbeing initiatives

• Strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the university

What you’d be doing:

As the Counselling Centre Manager, you will provide high-quality support to students, ensuring their mental health and wellbeing needs are met. You will also lead the counselling team, drive service development and build partnerships both across campus and within the wider city.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing one-to-one and group counselling sessions for students

• Line-managing the counselling team, including supervision and development

• Developing and managing the associates programme to extend service capacity

• Collaborating with academic and professional services colleagues to ensure coordinated support

• Contributing to university events such as open days, wellbeing initiatives, and staff training

• Building strategic partnerships across the city to enhance service delivery

• Driving the overall direction and impact of the counselling service

You’ll need to enjoy:

We care about how people behave as well as what they achieve. In this role, you will be:

• Collaborating with others: working closely with colleagues across the university and city partners to provide coordinated, high-quality support.

• Leading and supporting teams: line-managing the counselling team and supervising associates to develop skills and maintain high standards.

• Communicating effectively: building rapport with students and colleagues, delivering sensitive information clearly, and engaging confidently in person, by phone, and by email.

• Thinking creatively and strategically: developing initiatives such as the associates programme and new service partnerships to strengthen the counselling provision.

Where you’ll work:

In this role, you’ll be based in the Student Success Directorate, on our green campus in the north of Plymouth.

Under our current hybrid working policy, you may work from home or on campus; however, you are expected to maintain strong campus connections and be on-site at least 60% of the week with this requirement potentially increasing depending on service delivery needs.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Ellie Warnes, Head of Student Wellbeing and Support on EWarnes@marjon.ac.uk
