The new, bolstered Office for Investment (OfI) is an exciting, creative, and dynamic place to work, offering a unique opportunity to be part of a motivated and driven team from both commercial and public sector backgrounds. With the new OfI now a joint unit between No.10, HMT, and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), we are streamlining how the government approaches business and investment. Our vision and mission are to secure investment to drive growth, job creation, and increased productivity across the UK.
We provide a bespoke service for strategically important businesses and investors, now with additional commercial capability and enhanced marketing and analytical functions. Our team is more connected across Whitehall and uses networks from overseas posts through to the UK’s nations and regions to deliver strategically important investment. The flexible and flat structure means that staff across all grades can work directly alongside the senior leadership team and have direct exposure to ministers and senior business executives.
We are proactive and entrepreneurial, delivering ambitious outcomes aligned to the Industrial Strategy and HMG Missions. To become a centre of excellence for attracting and growing investment, we want to attract talented people from the private sector and across government who are curious, creative, and agile in pursuing emerging opportunities for the UK.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and oversee cross-functional virtual teams of DBT specialists to deliver and implement complex projects, employing advanced strategy consulting methodologies and best practices in policy development and evaluation. This includes understanding issues, analysing evidence, and designing innovative solutions.
- Lead on work to integrate the investor perspective into policy development by advising teams across Whitehall, advocating for growth and monitoring the impact of policy on the the business environment. This includes maintaining oversight of national security priorities, ensuring we balance the attractiveness of the UK as an investment destination while safeguarding national interests.
- Redesign and provide strategic oversight of core investment promotion services, bringing the delivery system together to achieve organisational objectives.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with DBT’s delivery teams overseas, sector specialists, and UK regional teams to provide strategic insights and high-level recommendations across policy, strategy, and delivery.
- Advise the Director General, Minister for Investment, OfI SLT, and Secretary of State on critical investment strategy and policy matters, offering expert guidance and strategic direction.
- Represent DBT at senior levels across Whitehall, Cabinet Office, and No10, driving improvements in investment promotion and sector and business environment priorities.
- Monitor and stay ahead of complex policy areas, business trends, and issues impacting inward investment, providing thought leadership and strategic foresight.
- Prepare and deliver high-quality PowerPoint presentations, briefings, and responses to commissions within tight timelines, ensuring clarity and impact.
- Utilise advanced project management methodologies across your work, including overseeing the successful delivery of milestones, managing multiple stakeholders, and setting the strategic direction of projects.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to raising standards, providing mentorship, sharing expertise, and showing leadership across your peer group as well as with junior and senior colleagues.
