Main Duties Clinical Manage the plain film imaging service with regard to efficient use of resources, quality and safety. Function as a key member of the Radiology/Radiography team. Display evidence of good anatomical, physiological and pathological knowledge to assist in the clinical justification of Radiography referrals in line with both national regulations IRMER (2000) (Ionising Regulations (Medical Exposure) Regulations) and local protocols. To act with as an operator under IR(ME)R 2017. To implement the requirements of all radiation legislation for the plain film imaging services at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. To act as a patient advocate in radiation protection issues. To liaise with referral sources where clarification is required for the most clinically appropriate imaging. To acquire high standard diagnostic images. Patients will have injuries or illness that will require adaptation of technique, utilisation of developed motivational and persuasive skills to acquire correct positioning and reduce mobility to produce an acceptable diagnostic image. To have excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of imaging equipment and techniques which may need to be modified in an appropriate manner to obtain the optimum image. To review current literature regarding current best practice and suggest change where necessary to the departmental imaging protocols. To ensure all appropriate infection control measures are utilised, paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens. Work as a senior member of a multi-disciplinary team, when undertaking radiographic procedures to provide a high quality of service to patients e.g. radiographic procedures in orthopaedic theatre and interventional procedures within the radiology department. To undertake other duties as and when required by the demands of the service or Interventional, X-ray & Fluoroscopy Manager. Be responsible for the delivery of clinical expertise in all aspects of patient care within the department. At all times behave in a manner appropriate to the professional code of conduct of a State Registered Radiographer. Operational Responsibilities To support the development of the Plain Film Imaging Service keeping abreast of any changes in working procedures, making recommendation when necessary. Ensure a high quality of service within the x-ray department. Oversee workflow through department and encourage colleagues and students. Be able to exercise personal responsibility and make decisions in unpredictable situations. To attend departmental meetings to comment on departmental related issues. To reflect on systems of work and communicate areas of deficit or potential advancement to the Radiology Management Team. To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patients or departmental need. Keep equipment, work areas and accessories clean and tidy. Be aware of all procedures to promote infection control and reduce cross infection. Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on imaging equipment. To perform regular equipment testing and reject analysis, ensuring all results are documented and reported. Ensure continuing familiarisation with the current QA measures in place within the department. To be in involved in departmental QA. Take responsibility for decisions undertaken when using own initiative whenever the situation demands e.g. referral to the Safeguarding team if applicable. To demonstrate a wide range of problem-solving skills involving allocation of staff due to absence and associated adequate service provision. To conduct examinations according to protocol for a range of clinical trials. Communication Communicate highly complex and sensitive information to the patient and referring clinician related to diagnosis. To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians. Keeping them informed of any delays to patient throughput that might result as a consequence of, for example excessive workload, equipment breakdown, sickness etc. Provide and receive highly complex information which requires empathy and reassurance and often involves overcoming barriers to understanding. To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers and patient enquiries. To assess and provide specific communication needs of individual patients. Provide information by explanation and demonstration of often-complex procedures and listening to the patients requirements in order to encourage compliance with the imaging process. Some patients will have a barrier to understanding e.g. dementia, language barriers, or be unable to communicate. Considering the predominantly unpredictable arrival of patients with communication difficulties, it is often down to the radiographer to develop some sort of improvised dialogue with the patient e.g. hand gestures and bodily movements. Provide reassurance as to the necessity of an x-ray examination involving a risk associated with the harmful effect of ionising radiation. To communicate effectively and empathetically with relatives of patients. To ensure that urgent findings are communicated and patients are directed accordingly. To effectively liaise with all disciplines of staff within the Radiology department giving support and advice where necessary. To complete all paperwork pertaining to compliance with Trust policies e.g. incident forms. Training & Development Support the education of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Encourage staff to improve their knowledge and skills and, where possible extend their roles. Provide constructive feedback to staff on the quality of radiographs produced. To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of both undergraduate and postgraduate radiographic staff particularly in highly specialist areas. Help promote Radiography initiatives and new radiographic roles. Help develop Radiology services in collaboration with other members of the team. As a senior member of the team to offer support, mentoring, advice and ensure the corrective guidance of junior staff, demonstrating an ability to motivate, particularly by example. To actively participate in the departments audit programme. To evaluate technology and its clinical application. To provide training in the use of clinical equipment for other staff. Advising on appropriate record keeping. To provide elements of induction training and support for other staff. Maintain a commitment to CPD, keeping up to date with latest developments as required for Clinical governance; ensure CPD portfolio is kept up to date. Participate in the staff appraisal and personal development plans as both a reviewer and reviewee. Organisational Responsibilities To assume responsibility for managing the Radiology department in the absence of the Interventional, X-ray & Fluoroscopy Manager, attending any meetings and undertaking duties as appropriate To manage and monitor daily activity within the speciality including waiting and reporting times. To utilise trust electronic systems to maintain compliance with Trust policies e.g. incident reporting, payroll attendance. To monitor and report equipment faults and to determine the severity of a problem and its probable impact on the workload. To make a balanced judgement on when to call in a service engineer, taking into account the effect on the normal running of the department. To liaise with equipment suppliers regarding the attendance of an engineer at a suitable time in the event of a minor faults or immediately in the event of a total equipment failure. Assist in the establishment and revision of standards and guidelines for best practice. Help organise and manage the workload for the radiology department as a Senior Radiographer. To participate in the appraisal of junior staff and students. To have expert knowledge and have the ability to train others on the full range of appropriate technical applications available in the imaging department. Advise more junior members of staff about their quality of work.. To assist in the planning and organisation of the workflow of the department. To organise workload in line with clinical priorities To monitor and report deficits in the data integrity of the information systems in use in the department. To report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk management policies. To ensure that all staff are informed of any changes across both the Trust and Directorate. To support the Interventional, X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Manager in the organisation of the weekly rotas for trained staff. To conduct return to work and sickness absences interviews, highlighting areas for improvement to the Interventional, X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Manager. To support the Interventional, X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Manager in the investigation of complaints and incidents, providing a response within the agreed timescales, in accordance with the Trust Policy. To liaise with the Radiology I.T. Systems and Performance Manager and Deputy with regard to the quality of information stored on the CRIS and PACS systems. To ensure that computerised and other staff records are up to date. In liaison with the Interventional, X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Manager ensure that equipment maintenance, servicing and physic surveys are carried out according to departmental protocol. Assist the Interventional, X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Manager in the selection and recruitment of staff. Monitor the quality of service to patients/clients assisting in the development and implementation of proposals for service improvements
