About the Role
The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is home to world-leading laser technologies and a vibrant research community. One of its key facilities, Artemis, specialises in ultrafast laser and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) science, enabling researchers to study rapid processes at the atomic and molecular level.
We’re offering an exciting industrial placement within the Artemis Group, where you’ll work alongside experienced scientists and engineers on cutting-edge experiments. You’ll gain hands-on experience operating ultrafast lasers, managing vacuum systems, and supporting visiting researchers. You’ll also contribute to new developments such as XUV Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (XTAS) and EUV ptychography, helping to push the boundaries of nanoscale imaging and ultrafast science.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate ultrafast lasers and manage optical setups
- Work with vacuum systems and beamline instrumentation
- Support visiting researchers with experimental setups and troubleshooting
- Contribute to ongoing development projects within the Artemis facility
- Use scientific tools for instrument control and data analysis
- Work independently and collaboratively on assigned research tasks
Person Specification
Essential Criteria (assessed via shortlisting and/or interview):
✔Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree and returning to complete your studies after the placement (S)
✔Required or have requested to undertake an industrial placement year (S)
✔Eligible to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
✔Available to start in summer 2026 (S)
✔Completed first two years of a degree in physics, chemistry or a closely related subject, with grades equivalent to a 2:1 or higher (S)
✔GCSE English or equivalent (S)
✔Experience in experimental physics, chemistry or a related lab course (S)
✔Ability to apply scientific concepts to practical problem-solving (I)
✔Understanding of relevant fundamental principles from university studies (I)
✔Highly motivated and able to work independently and in a team (I)
✔Effective written and verbal communication skills (I)
✔Responsible approach to health and safety (I)
Desirable Criteria:
✔A-levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths or Further Maths (S)
✔Programming and/or data analysis skills (S)
✔Experience in a research or laboratory environment (S)
