About the Role
The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is one of the world’s leading laser centres, enabling pioneering research in physics, chemistry and biology. Our work contributes to solving global challenges such as clean energy, health, environmental sustainability and food security. We also train future experts, drive innovation, and promote excellence across science and technology.
We’re currently building Vulcan 20-20, the world’s most powerful laser — and we’re looking for a passionate undergraduate to join our Impact & Engagement team to help communicate this exciting science to a wide range of audiences.
This placement is ideal for someone with a keen interest in science communication — whether you're a science student looking to pivot into outreach, or a journalism student keen to specialise in science. You’ll work across multiple channels including websites, social media, video, graphics, events and exhibitions, helping to bring CLF’s work to life.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and present CLF science through written, verbal and visual formats
- Create and manage content for websites and social media
- Develop case studies showcasing staff and industrial collaborations
- Support scientists and engineers in delivering public events
- Assist with photography, videography and graphic design
- Contribute to wider communications team activities
- Develop your own communications projects with support and training
Person Specification
Essential Criteria (assessed via shortlisting and/or interview):
✔Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree and returning to complete your studies after the placement (S)
✔Required or have requested to undertake an industrial placement year (S)
✔Eligible to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
✔Available to start in summer 2026 (S)
✔GCSE English or equivalent (S)
✔Strong interest in science and science communication (S&I)
✔Excellent writing, presentation and organisational skills (S&I)
✔Good team working skills (S&I)
✔Willingness to learn new skills (I)
✔Open-minded and flexible approach to work (I)
Desirable Criteria:
✔A-levels or equivalent in Science and English (S)
✔Experience in graphic design, social media or video/audio production (S&I)
✔Experience writing for publication (S&I)
✔Experience in STEM outreach to non-scientific audiences (S&I)
