The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the Board of Trustees for ensuring the effective
leadership, strategic direction, financial sustainability, and operational delivery of the Trust.
The CEO will provide overall vision, management, and representation of the Trust, ensuring services
are delivered to a high standard, partnerships are nurtured, and the Trust’s reputation as the leading
community anchor in East Durham is strengthened.
Primary Responsibilities
• Promote and champion the mission, values, and impact of East Durham Trust.
• Provide strategic leadership in line with the Trust’s objectives and community needs.
• Ensure financial sustainability and operational efficiency.
• Lead the Trust’s staff and volunteer workforce, embedding a culture of collaboration,
accountability, and innovation.
• Maintain and develop external partnerships and stakeholder relationships.
• Oversee effective governance and support the Trustees to fulfil their responsibilities.
• Lead the Trust’s digital transformation and ensure robust systems underpin service delivery
and compliance.
Main Duties
Strategic Leadership
• Work with Trustees and stakeholders to set and deliver long-term strategy and business
plans.
• Champion innovation and partnership working to address poverty, exclusion, and inequality.
• Position East Durham Trust as a leading voice within the voluntary and community sector
regionally and nationally.
Finance and Fundraising
• Oversee all financial planning, control, and reporting, ensuring the sustainability of the
organisation.
• Ensure effective use of the Xero accounting system for accurate, timely financial
management.
• Develop and oversee income generation strategies, including contracts, grants, trading, and
partnerships.
• Ensure Trustees receive accurate, timely, and accessible financial information.
Service Delivery and Development
• Ensure high-quality delivery of the Trust’s programmes and projects.
• Oversee continued development of digital referral processes and the Charity Log CRM system
to enhance case management, monitoring, and evaluation.
• Ensure services are designed and delivered in line with community needs and emerging
challenges, including poverty, cost-of-living pressures, and digital exclusion.
• Develop and maintain a strong culture of volunteer engagement.
Premises and Operations
• Oversee the management and effective use of Community House.
• Ensure the building is safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable.
• Support further development of Community House as a hub for partners and local people.
Governance and Compliance
• Ensure the Trust complies with all legal, regulatory, and safeguarding responsibilities.
• Maintain robust policies and procedures, including HR, health and safety, and data
protection.
• Lead on risk management, ensuring Trustees are fully informed of key risks and mitigation
strategies.
• Support the Trustees with timely information and guidance to ensure effective governance.
External Relations
• Represent East Durham Trust at the highest levels with funders, partners, policymakers, and
media.
• Build and maintain strategic partnerships across sectors.
• Act as a spokesperson and advocate for the communities of East Durham.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
• Significant experience in a senior leadership role within the voluntary, community, or social
enterprise sector.
• Strong knowledge of charity governance, law, and compliance requirements.
• Proven experience of developing and delivering successful funding and income strategies.
• Knowledge of financial management and digital accounting systems (e.g., Xero).
• Understanding of CRM systems and digital referral platforms (e.g., Charity Log).
• Awareness of key issues affecting deprived communities and the voluntary sector in 2025.
• Management qualification (desirable).
Skills
• Excellent leadership, organisational, and project management skills.
• Strong financial literacy, including budgeting and risk management.
• Ability to communicate and influence effectively at all levels.
