The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre is the heart of the arts and entertainment scene in Newport, with professional performances on stage (including our fantastic Panto!), film screenings in the cinema, and a huge variety of workshops, as well as running and hosting other great events such as Big Splash!.
Our Pantomime is a highlight of the festive season, and this year we will be performing Rapunzel. To assist with the smooth running of the panto, we are looking for licensed Chaperones, who will have responsibility for the health, safety and wellbeing of all the young people (aged under 18 years) who are in the cast.
You must hold a current DBS for working with young people, and a chaperone licence.
Main responsibilities include:
- Supervision of the young people in the cast, ensuring their health, safety and wellbeing at all times
- Check that the young people feel safe, looked after, and are able to enjoy the event
- Ensure the young people are only ever in the care of responsible adults whilst taking part in performances and activities
- Challenge any concerning behaviour, escalating concerns to the appropriate person(s)
- Look after the young people in their dressing rooms, are supervised when in the wings waiting to go on stage, and ensure they are on their best behaviour during performances and rehearsals
- Assist with equipment, materials, clothing, data capture, and any resources as required
- Support with register and reports
- Be positive, approachable, inclusive, and professional, at all times
Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experiences
- Previous experience of chaperoning young people
- Thorough understanding of core safeguarding and child protection principles
- Friendly approach and manner
- Unfazed when working under pressure to strict deadlines
- Discrete approach dealing with situations
- Understanding the importance of confidentiality
- Confident in challenging inappropriate behaviour and raising concerns to the appropriate team member
Beneficial Skills, Qualifications and Experiences
- Relevant attendance at Safeguarding and Protecting Children training (vital for the role but not for your application)
- Ability to converse / communicate in Welsh
- Hold a current First Aid at Work certificate
- Experience within theatre/arts environment
If you hold a current chaperone license and love Panto season, we would love to hear from you for this fantastic fixed-term opportunity!
Contract: This is a fixed-term contract running from 09 November 2025 - 04 January 2026
Hours: To be confirmed with the successful applicant's availability, which is required for both rehearsals and performances once the Panto opens. Performances take place during the day for school showings, weekday evenings, and weekend matinees and evenings, throughout the season.
Pay: £16.18 per hour
Benefits: you will receive free Newport Live membership during your contract, which includes gym membership, use of our leisure facilities, café discount, two-for-one cinema tickets, and access to wellbeing programmes.
The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and is subject to a successful Disclosing and Barring Service (DBS) check.
