Development Communications Manager
Media Department

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Development Communications Manager who is creative, solutions-focused and hardworking, to build the profile of our partnerships with institutional funders in Europe including Novamedia/Postcode Lottery Group.
This is a fixed-term, full-time position for 6 months, with the possibility of extension. The position will be based in our Amsterdam, Berlin, London or Stockholm office and will report to the Audience Engagement Director based in New York.
Responsibilities
Develop, adapt, and execute communications content, strategies and activities that showcase the impact of our work for funding partners and audiences;
Work with the Audience team to suggest ideas for videos, social media content and other communications materials that showcase the partnerships and promote HRW’s work in a straightforward and compelling way to appeal to a broad audience;
Liaise with external partners on communications needs, plans, and reviews, and with internal stakeholders on content review, translations, distribution, and tracking.
Monitor and identify opportunities within HRW to deliver communications activity, such as news releases, videos, photos, campaigns, social media posts, and other content of relevance to engage a broad audience on human rights issues;
Extensive reporting back on communications efforts and media and social media reach.
Coordinate the adaptation of editorial products to different languages, to widen reach of HRW content and also build the profile of our partnerships;
Work with the Multimedia team to research and develop multimedia products that will further HRW’s objectives;
Advise team members on how to make complex ideas simple and engaging through effective writing skills and visually compelling video and other content, ensuring HRW’s editorial standards and adhere to the highest journalistic practices;
Collaborate with HRW Media and Development departments to develop communications plans;
Manage and prioritize multiple projects with attention to all details both in creative production and management of the work;
Deliver outputs and performance reports in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Media and Development Department;
Actively seek to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into multimedia, including collaborating with global partners and consultants;
Manage content distribution, logging, archiving footage, and other tasks related to production;
Attend donor communications related events and meetings;
Carry out other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education: A bachelor’s in Communications, Journalism, Multimedia, Marketing, Visual Arts or equivalent experience is required. Candidates with equivalent training/experience and a passion for journalism and/or human rights work are encouraged to apply.
Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant experience working in broadcast journalism, video production, communications, marketing, or a similar field is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in another language, such as Dutch, German, or Swedish, is preferred. Ability to work effectively with multiple languages is required.
Track record in conceptualising, creating and posting content on social media that resonates with broad audiences is required.Familiarity with legacy and emerging social media channels is desired, experience with LinkedIn is a plus.
Track record in developing and co-ordinating communications activity involving multiple stakeholders is required.
Excellent storytelling copywriting and editing skills are required.
Creativity and the ability to identify and turn around a shareable story quickly is required.
Demonstrate traits of tact, discretion, sound editorial judgment and the ability to function in a confidential capacity is required.
Working knowledge of Mac OS are required; Proficiency in design software like Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. are desirable.
Experience using digital tools and software including Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Sprout Social, and similar products is preferred.
Experience in project management and project management software like Asana, Monday.com or similar products are required.
Proficiency in analyzing data, generating insights, and implementing best practices are required.
Ability to demonstrate continual learning in the field of communications is required.
Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail are required.
Excellent project management skills: from definition and design to delivery and evaluation is required.
Ability to multi-task multiple stories while also producing long-term projects, work under pressure, and thrive in a deadline-driven environment is required.
Interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur, producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.
Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, creative problem-solver, highly organized, and demonstrates the ability to work well as a member of a team are required.
