Our Environment & Business External Affairs Team is looking for an ambitious Senior External Affairs Specialist to develop and deliver our engagement strategy for sustainable growth. Sustainable growth is one of the Environment Agency’s long-term goals, as set out in our corporate strategy EA2030.

Although based in the Environment and Business Directorate this role will involve working right across the business, joining up across directorates, aligning stakeholder agendas, building strong relationships and working on high-profile issues.

Please note that this is a busy and fast-moving role. You will need the ability to balance strategic issues with reactive, which will often involve reprioritising and delivering work quickly under pressure.

Main responsibilities:

• Developing communications and engagement plans and strategies that are intelligence-led and meet agreed objectives.
• Keeping on top of your brief so that you can provide strategic advice on stakeholder engagement, including establishing trusted relationships.
• Provide timely and well-considered advice to Environment Agency executives regarding our stakeholder approach, including possible announcements.
• Horizon scan for opportunities and risks to inform relationships with key external stakeholders.
• Use insight to shape strategies and flex our approach as needed.
• Build peer and senior relationships with Environment Agency and Defra communications colleagues.

You may also be asked to support on other engagement priorities in support of the wider External Affairs team

The team

The E&B External Affairs team is responsible for advising and influencing our directorate on building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and organisations; strengthening our voice and influence so that our work is better known, trusted, and has greater impact.
We’re a dispersed team and work with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders across the country.

Experience/skills required

You will be an experienced communications and engagement specialist, with great judgement and collaboration skills. In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your experience and understanding of:

•leading, managing, and delivering strategic engagement strategies
•effectively communicating complex information
