After many years of collaboration and creating closer working ties, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust formed a hospital group and appointed a Group Chief Executive in August 2021 (following the appointment of a Chairman in Common in 2019) and a single executive team in January 2022.

Working as a hospital group under one executive leadership team allows for more joined up decision making for local people, a larger and more resilient clinical workforce, reduced variation in care and access to a wider range of services for our patients.
The Group Chief Nurse (GCNO) and Group Chief Medical Officer (CMO) are the Executive Directors jointly accountable to the Trust Boards for the delivery of the quality and safety agenda, including patient experience.

Acting within the divisional structure the post holder will provide strong operational and professional leadership to maternity and gynaecology services, overseeing and directing service response to day-to-day site operational pressures, ensuring transformative, effective, and efficient delivery of Trust services.


The post holder is professionally accountable to the Site Chief Nurse for supporting the delivery of the quality agenda and patient safety strategy and the Group Chief Nurse has overall accountability for maternity service.

The role reports into the leadership of CWDT Division and supports the delivery of effective professional practice in accordance with statutory, professional, and clinical governance requirements.
The post holder will support the Trust on all aspects of professional practice relating to Womens services and provide professional advice directly about maternity related matters and strategic development of services

There is a strong focus on the strategic delivery of high standards of care. The role involves working in close partnership with other organisations across the SW London and Surrey Heartlands LMNS, and wider engagement with the Integrated Care Boards, maternity providers, Public Health England, Health Education England, Care Quality Commission, the Regional Chief Midwife, Royal Colleges and other key stakeholders.
 The post holder will be accountable to the Group Chief Nurse and will play a key leadership role within the division.
 The post holder works closely alongside the Divisional Chair dnd Divisional Director of Operations (DDO) for the CWDT Division, taking the lead on midwifery and gynaecology development programmes, midwifery and nurse recruitment and retention, measuring and improving standards of care and the women’s experience.



St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

 The post holder will ensure all aspects of clinical governance and risk are robustly and effectively managed.
 The postholder will be a Maternity Safety Champion
 The post holder will contribute to and lead strategic and innovative midwifery developments across SWL and Surrey Heartlands Local Maternity System, including ongoing transformation work to deliver safety and the Better Births agenda
 The post holder will lead a consistent and standardised approach in the delivery and achievement of NHS Resolution Safety Actions, Supporting CNST recommendations and implementation of the SBLCB
 The post holder will support the matrons and lead midwifery roles to ensure safe standards of midwifery care are delivered to the highest quality.

 The post holder will lead on developing a structure and workforce to deliver the new model of care as a result of building the specialist emergency care hospital on the Sutton site, developing a model of care that will deliver an efficient use of resource within the three site hospital model.
 The postholder will ensure regular reviews of the Maternity Workforce Race Equality Standards data and develop strategies and champion the Anti Racism Framework
