SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: Erdington, B24 Birmingham
Pay Rate: £105 - 115
Days: Monday to Friday (Term Time Only)
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Long-Term, Temp to Perm
Are you passionate about early language development and inclusive learning? A warm, community-focused primary school in Erdington is looking for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils in EYFS and KS1 with Speech, Language and Communication Needs and English as an Additional Language. This is a long-term position and for the right candidate, there is potential for this role to be made permanent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver speech and language programmes designed by the school's Speech and Language Therapist
- Support children with EAL by modelling rich vocabulary, sentence structures, and conversational turn-taking
- Lead engaging oracy circles and small-group language sessions
- Use PECS and Makaton to support non-verbal or minimally verbal children where appropriate
- Provide tailored phonics support to boost early reading confidence
- Create a calm, encouraging environment where children feel safe to speak and explore language
What We're Looking For:
- Experience supporting pupils with SLCN and/or EAL in EYFS or KS1
- Familiarity with tools like PECS, Makaton, and structured language programmes
- Confident supporting early speech and phonics development
- A warm, consistent communicator who brings energy and patience to every day
- Team-focused, with a willingness to follow SALT guidance and contribute ideas
