Job title: Senior Data Analyst

About us
HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. Our roles support our service users and colleagues, where people and businesses access potentially life-changing justice. We’re looking for individuals who are committed to public service and want to make a difference in people’s lives in delivering justice. If you’re interested in developing a career with a real purpose, please apply.
About the role
Data Analyst – User Experience and Insight
The User Experience and Insight team ensures that our understanding of user characteristics, behaviours and needs, is researched, analysed and shared in inspiring ways to inform decision making throughout HMCTS. You will support the development and deployment of a multi-disciplinary research and insight approach to create a comprehensive and effective view of our users.
The team lead the development of research and insight on users from all available sources (qualitative and quantitative) to inform what we know, supporting and analysing the development of new digital and operational solutions.
This work will be a challenging role and offers a wide range of opportunities to develop your experience whilst making a real difference to services for millions of citizens. You will join a team dedicated to developing your skills and career within a multi-disciplinary environment. The team currently contains expertise and leadership experience across social and market research, behavioural science, digital development, experimental/trials evaluation, operational research and data analysis.
Key Responsibilities
You will work on a variety of projects that require analytical thinking and hands-on coding/programming skills to generate insights on users of our services. Examples of current projects in the team include:
Analysis of access to justice: to ensure that citizens have access to the justice they are seeking in our courts and tribunals. This work involves the analysis and modelling of service data alongside protected characteristics and geodemographic data to measure access and identify how access to justice could be improved.
Contributing insight to drive service improvements: service teams in each jurisdiction of HMCTS regularly review data from a range of sources to better understand how they can improve and better serve citizens. There will be opportunities to contribute insight to these discussions and thus play a significant role in improving the quality of our services.
The role presents a rare opportunity to analyse the characteristics and behaviour of a wide variety of people, at scale, to inform the development of new services and continually improve the customer experience in the operational business. The parties involved in cases, or potential cases, range from the individual money claimant seeking to recover funds from a company to vulnerable social security appellants, or the victims of crime.
You will support the development of analysis across the organisation, building relationships and collaborating with other analytical teams across the department to fill data and knowledge gaps and build on best practice.
Who are we looking for? (Person Specification)
Essential
The ideal candidate for this position should demonstrate:
A 2:1 (or higher) degree or degree apprenticeship in a highly numerate degree subject
Strong programming skills in R and experience of applying them in a professional analytical role for data analysis and visualisation
Able to apply analytical thinking to identify opportunities for analysis and to break down complex problems into a clear structure that can be tackled through analysis of available data and modelling
Experienced at communicating results of analysis in a straightforward, honest and engaging manner, choosing appropriate styles to maximise understanding and impact.
Desirable
Experience of collaborating with specialists from other analytical professions to provide a robust evidence base for policy and operational decisions
Experience of using SQL (Structured Query Language) for initial data queries
Interest in learning more advanced statistical and machine learning methods.

Please answer the technical question below by providing evidence (in no more than 250 words) that demonstrates your ability to apply analytical thinking — specifically: how do you identify opportunities for analysis and break down complex problems into a clear, structured approach using available data and modelling.
We will aim to sift the CV, statement of suitability and technical question but, in the event of a large number of applicants, an initial short sift may be conducted on the lead criteria of the CV only. Candidates who pass the initial sift of the CV will either:
