Animal Instructor
Department: Land Based Industries
Hourly Rate: £12.72 to £14.63 per hour
Contract Type: Variable Hours

Reference: REC2266 | Closing Date: Tuesday, 23rd September 2025

Variable Hours

This role is offered on a Variable Hours contract for services, giving you the flexibility to choose whether to accept work offered to you. We’ll provide an approximate number of hours you may be asked to work, however there is no obligation for work to be offered, and there’s no obligation for you to accept the work offered.

The Opportunity

You will play an important role in preparing the next generation of animal management professionals. Whether you already have teaching experience or are currently working in animal care and looking to move into education, this is your opportunity to share your knowledge and support our students as they build rewarding careers in the industry.

You will be based at our Wigfield Farm campus in Worsbrough, where you will work closely with our Course Leaders and colleagues across the Land-based Industries team to deliver engaging and practical lessons. With access to a wide range of resources, including our animal collection, you will ensure that students gain both hands-on experience and a strong theoretical foundation. Your teaching will help learners develop essential skills and an understanding of professional standards within the sector.

You will plan and deliver lessons on animal husbandry, health checks, enrichment design, training, and wider management practices. You will demonstrate techniques in real working conditions, providing students with the chance to refine their skills while developing confidence and independence. Alongside practical teaching, you will track progress, assess work, and provide constructive feedback to support learners in achieving their qualifications and future goals.

You will also contribute to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment, ensuring health and safety procedures are followed at all times. Your role will include preparing resources, contributing to individual learning plans, and delivering both group and one-to-one instruction. By offering guidance, setting clear expectations, and making effective use of resources, you will enable students to succeed and prepare them for progression into employment or further study.

About You

You’re a skilled animal professional who takes pride in the care you provide and in helping others succeed in animal management. With hands-on experience in the animal industry, you have a strong understanding of key techniques such as health checks, enrichment design, and training. You know industry standards inside out and are committed to delivering quality animal husbandry.

You will bring enthusiasm for teaching and a genuine interest in supporting students to progress in both their knowledge and confidence. You’re a great communicator who can connect with learners from all backgrounds and skill levels, whether they are complete beginners or looking to refine their expertise. Patience, adaptability, and a supportive approach are key, as you’ll be guiding students through hands-on practice and underpinning theory.

If you have previously taught or trained others, that would be an advantage, but what really matters is your enthusiasm for passing on your knowledge. A teaching qualification such as a PGCE or Cert Ed would be beneficial.

Organisation and flexibility will be important as you plan engaging lessons, track student progress, and keep learners motivated. You will also play an essential role in maintaining health and safety standards, ensuring a safe learning environment for all, particularly during practical sessions.

Ultimately, we are looking for someone who is passionate about their trade, enjoys working with people, and wants to inspire the next generation of land-based professionals. By sharing your expertise and enthusiasm, you will give students the confidence and skills they need to succeed in the animal management industry.

Below is a list of some of the key skills, qualifications and experience we are seeking for this exciting opportunity.

• A relevant Level 3 qualification in Animal Care or a related field
• A Level 3 teaching qualification (CTLLS) – or the willingness to work towards one
