We require a 6 month Trust Locum Doctor ST1-2 Level Locally Employed in Paediatrics (possibility of extended period)


The post will have duties/clinical sessions in General Paediatrics and Neonates. The post holders will take part in the ST1 rota as per the job description. Applicants should have a good experience in General Paediatrics and Neonatology and be aiming for a career in Paediatrics.


The department is staffed by 14 Consultants (2 Community based) 2 Specialty Doctors, 4 Specialist Registrars ST4-8 (1 in community), 5 ST1-2 Paediatrics / GP trainees and 5 FY 1-2 doctors. We also have 2 Physician’s associates (PA) as part of our team and 2 Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners.


Blackpool Teaching Hospital is a busy 849 bedded District General Hospital with an active Post Graduate Centre, a programme of MRCP training, excellent library facilities and medical research and audit is well established. Hence lots of opportunities for training and education.

THIS POST MAY CLOSE EARLY DEPENDING ON NUMBER OF APPLICANTS

The junior paediatric trainees on the general ward are responsible for the care of babies and children admitted to the children’s ward and assessing patients referred by the Emergency Department and GPs. They are responsible for ward work, keeping thorough, legible notes and discharge summaries, as well as participating in the weekly training.

The trainee is expected to get to know the patients on the wards. Experience will be gained in acute and general paediatrics in the management of patients with shared oncology and child protection work.

The trainee would be expected to both lead and accompany the attending consultant on the regular daily ward round in co-operation with nursing staff and junior trainees.

Duties include:
• Liaison with nursing staff, parents, medical and support services.
• Supervision of ward work and record keeping.
• Liaison with the attending general paediatric consultant.
• Systematic “handover” of patients and their problems to colleagues at shift changes.
• Liaison with tertiary units for shared care patient.
• Attendance and participation with joint medical meetings and training.
• Medical student and junior trainee teaching.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1st December 2007. The Trust gained Teaching Hospital status and became Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2010. In April 2012 the Trust merged with community health services from NHS Blackpool and NHS North Lancashire as part of the Transformation of Patient Pathways Programme. We are now a Vanguard site with Extensive Care Services provided for the complex elderly population within Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.



The Trust serves a population of approximately 440,000 residents across Blackpool, Fylde, Wyre, Lancashire and South Cumbria and the North of England. It comprises Blackpool Victoria Hospital which is a large busy acute hospital and two smaller community hospitals – Clifton Hospital and Fleetwood Hospital and the National Artificial Eye Service. The Trust is also responsible for the provision of Community services such as District Nursing and Midwifery to a large geographical area, extending from Lytham St Annes in the South to Morecambe and Carnforth in the North.

Trainees are responsible for supporting care of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the postnatal wards and in the labour ward. They are expected to participate in ward rounds, neonatal-obstetric meetings, paediatric training meetings and monthly perinatal meetings. They are responsible for completing neonatal discharge summaries and NIPEs (Newborn examinations)

Experience will be gained in neonatal resuscitation and Neonatal Intensive Care. Trainees are supported to become proficient in technical skills including: intravenous cannulation, insertion of umbilical lines and lumbar puncture.



Clinical duties include:
• Participation in ward rounds
• Supervision of, and participation in, daily record keeping, updating of results, supervision of junior trainee summaries and completion of complex summaries.
• Attending labour wards and postnatal wards.
• Social and parental support.
• Communication with the parents of infants on delivery suite and post natal ward.
• Opportunity for presentation of cases at the monthly neonatal meetings.
• Neonatal procedures, intravenous lines, UVC, lumbar punctures (teaching and support provided)
• Record keeping.
