Assistant Laboratory Technician (Schools and Communities)
Salary: CIRCA £23,500 per annum
Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week) permanent
The International Centre for Life is a thriving science hub in the heart of Newcastle. Its purpose is to inspire everyone to explore and enjoy science and to provide a world class science hub where life enhancing engagement, research and clinical treatment can thrive. Life is home to NHS clinics as well as scientists and researchers from Newcastle University. Life Science Centre is at the heart of this ‘circle of science’ and aspires to be most accessible and inclusive visitor attraction in the UK. It has an international reputation for its work in sensory engagement.
We are looking for a motivated and energetic individual to join our Schools and Communities team to help deliver hands-on, curriculum-linked workshops in our Learning Labs. This is a really exciting opportunity to be part of a fast-paced and busy environment, where hundreds of school students visit each week to take part in fun, science-based learning experiences. You will be supporting our Senior Lab Technician to make sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes and in the labs.
Your day-to-day will involve helping to set up and clear away materials and equipment for workshops, keeping the prep room and labs clean, safe and well-stocked, and making sure everything is ready for our visiting schools and community groups. You will also be responsible for maintaining stock levels, safely disposing of waste and any hazardous materials, and making sure we are following all of the right Health and Safety procedures. On top of that, you will help prepare resources to support the delivery team with workshops and outreach activities.
We are looking for someone who is confident, approachable and reliable, with great organisational skills and a good eye for detail. You do not need any previous experience—just a genuine interest in science and a willingness to learn about all areas of STEM and the equipment we use. Full training will be provided, and we would love to hear from school or college leavers who are enthusiastic about getting involved.
Life is a welcoming and friendly place to work. We offer a range of benefits to support your wellbeing, including access to wellbeing initiatives, an Employee Assistance Programme, a health cash plan with a 24/7 GP service line, and discounted car parking in the centre of Newcastle.
The successful applicant will be subject to a DBS check. Details of our DBS policy are available on request. For further information regarding this post, please refer to the job description and person specification on our website.
To apply for this vacancy, please complete the online application form which can be accessed from our website at https://www.life.org.uk/join-the-team/ by 21 September 2025.
Interviews will take place on 2 October 2025.
