An Exciting Leadership Opportunity in a Dynamic, Supportive Team

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Band 7 Orthoptist to join our friendly and forward-thinking Orthoptic team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This is a cross-site role, primarily based between the Royal Free Hospital and Whittington Hospital, providing diverse clinical experience across two vibrant settings.

As a senior clinician, you will take the lead on a designated service within the orthoptic specialty, contributing to the development and delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, and referring clinicians such as Neurologists and Max Fac ENT specialists. As well as support ongoing education, innovation, and service improvement initiatives.

What We’re Looking For:

A qualified Orthoptist registered with the HCPC
Significant post-qualification experience, with strong clinical skills across core orthoptic areas
Proven ability to lead or develop a specialist area of practice
Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
A flexible, proactive approach to cross-site working

Key Responsibilities:

Provide advanced orthoptic assessment, diagnosis, and management across a broad range of complex cases
Lead and develop a specialist service area (e.g. stroke, neuro-ophthalmology, paediatrics, or adult motility – depending on expertise and service needs)
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and service development projects
Support and supervise junior orthoptists and students
Work autonomously while collaborating within a supportive multi-disciplinary team

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s biggest and most innovative trusts. Across three main hospitals, our dedicated army of staff care for over 1.6million patients, treat more than 200,000 in A&E, deliver over 8,000 babies and carry out more than 17million tests.
