About us

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has a clear mission - to grow the economy. Our role is to help businesses invest, grow and export to create jobs and opportunities right across the country. We do this in three ways.

Firstly, we help to build a strong, competitive business environment, where consumers are protected and companies rewarded for treating their employees properly.

Secondly, we open international markets and ensure resilient supply chains. This can be through Free Trade Agreements, trade facilitation and multilateral agreements.

Finally, we work in partnership with businesses every day, providing advance, finance and deal-making support to those looking to start up, invest, export and grow.

The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) directorate develops and operates tools and services to support us in this mission.

This is a technical and strategically critical role within our Technology portfolio at DBT, overseeing a large and complex platform that supports both internal and external services.

You will lead the transformation of the DBT Platform ensuring the platform is robust, secure, scalable and efficient. You will own the roadmap to achieve this vision ensuring it aligns with the department’s digital transformation goals. This requires collaboration with technical architects, engineering leads, cyber security and platform users.

As part of our Product and Delivery Leadership Team, you’ll play a key role in shaping how we work across DBT, bringing your experience of technical operations and leading platform teams. You’ll work closely with colleagues across DDaT to understand the organisation’s future needs and help teams validate and deliver against them. You’ll also lead on communicating your team’s work to ministers and senior Civil Service leaders bringing clarity, insight and impact to the conversation.

This is a technical leadership role requiring experience with cloud-hosted platforms. The successful candidate will be well-versed in implementing and optimising a DevOps culture and supporting teams to work in this way. You’ll have experience of introducing end-to-end automated testing, deployment pipelines, and introducing performance metrics like DORA, and then acting on the findings to drive efficiency and excellence. You will also demonstrate AI literacy and an understanding of emerging technologies, enabling them to guide innovation and resilience across the platform. Crucially you must have a proven track record of leading large-scale platform operations and, ideally, infrastructure products, ensuring stability, scalability and strategic alignment with organisational goals.

Main responsibilities

You will:

  • Lead the transformation of the DBT platform ensuring long-term resilience and scalability
  • Deliver a future-state platform while maintaining stability and continuity of existing services
  • Develop and own a compelling product vision and roadmap, balancing user needs, technical capabilities and business value
  • Champion agile delivery and DevOps culture across multiple teams, embedding modern engineering practices
  • Represent the platform at senior boards, providing clear, strategic updates and influencing decision-making
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of experienced product managers, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
