What you’ll do…

In the Forest of Dean the Tree Safety programme of surveying and work planning is a hugely important task, the rich historic legacy of embedded cottages, small-holdings and newer builds each with their own boundary makes the role interesting and challenging. You will support the Beat Forester in planning and implementing all aspects of Tree Safety management including:

• Surveys,

• Specifying work

• Contractor supervision

• GIS editing/ data management

Where you’ll work…

You will be based and work out of the Coleford Office in the Forest of Dean which as a historic forest has its origins as a royal forest pre-dating the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Forest of Dean is a complex woodland, surrounded by settlements, criss-crossed by roads and made up of a mosaic of woodland and open habitats.

The Forest of Dean is divided into two beat teams East and West, these teams are led by a Beat Forester and assisted by a team of Work Supervisors, Community Rangers, Wildlife Rangers, Forest Craftspersons and Forest Wardens.

The Forest of Dean Beats are two of the twelve beats that make up the West Forest District which extends from the Shropshire Hills AONB south to the majestic oak and beech woods of Savernake Forest in Wiltshire and south-west to Idless Woods near Truro in Cornwall. The District is managed from the District Office in Coleford, in the Forest of Dean.

Operational

  • plan, deliver and supervise work programmes for contractors and staff that contribute to the delivery of District objectives and are compliant with the UK Forestry Standard and UK Woodland Assurance Standard, particularly focused on Tree Safety work
  • ensure the effective delivery of work programmes through anticipating and providing resources necessary to efficiently undertake the work
  • as required, gather operational data accurately and efficiently and maintain appropriate up to date records to the standard required

Stakeholder Engagement, Representation and Communications

  • through effective liaison with other staff and stakeholders, plan, implement and deliver efficient work programmes that satisfy the aims of Forestry England
  • engage proactively and respond constructively to existing and prospective customers and present the highest standards of professionalism when representing Forestry England in the marketplace
  • collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure our work delivers for people, nature and the rural economy

Health and Safety

  • ensure that all work programmes undertaken meet appropriate standards of health and safety, operational efficiency and quality of output
  • support the Beat Forester through regular supervision of Forest Craftsperson team when under taking tree safety work through checking and recording standards of Health and Safety
  • supervise FE staff through supporting them in decision making, inspecting and recording standards of PPE and other safety equipment

And any other tasks, reasonably requested by your line manager.
