About the role

The Faculty of Science and Engineering wish to appoint a Senior Technician to provide teaching and research support for the School of Engineering Computing and Mathematics.

You will work as part of a team under the direction of the School Technical Manager and deliver support in all aspects of our new cutting-edge STEAM Laboratory.

The STEAM Laboratory is an active learning facility, bringing experimental testing resources into one place that enables large groups of students to use inquiry-based activities to learn the fundamental principles of engineering science and technology through experimentation, observation, and analysis.

You will be expected to have an NVQ/BTEC level 3/4 or Degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent appropriate experience in a relevant subject. Practical knowledge and experience in fundamental engineering science and technology skills (including but not limited to: basic Engineering Science, Materials Testing, Fluid Mechanics and Structures) is desirable but training to cover any gaps will be provided for the right candidate.

You will have particular responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the STEAM rooms. This will include the management and maintenance of a range of student focused engineering and physics equipment. As well as engaging with students using the facility during and outside of timetabled hours.

You will enjoy working in a student focused environment and will have demonstrable experience of working with and engaging students to support their education and practical skills development.

This is an exciting opportunity to help develop this space into a vibrant, cutting edge learning environment for our engineering students. In addition to catering to our current students, this space s used for outreach and widening participation activities to encourage local school students to consider engineering career paths. Interest and experience in these activities would be desirable.

This is an exciting time to join the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (SECaM) as the £63 million Babbage Building creates the state-of-the-art space for inspiring research and teaching, and enables multidisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the School. SECaM is a welcoming and inspiring place to work and study. SECaM is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and includes the subject areas of civil and coastal engineering, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering and robotics, mathematical science, mechanical, marine and materials engineering and navigation and maritime science. We are a collaborative and interdisciplinary community of world-leading academics, researchers and technicians focused on the advancement of knowledge and the creation of innovative solutions that have a positive impact on society. We have an extensive portfolio of research from offshore renewable energy, coastal engineering and robotics to cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and data science. With many internationally recognised experts, our teaching staff are passionate about providing an innovative and inspiring learning experience. The School holds an Athena Swan Silver award that demonstrates our ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality and success for all. Women and members of other currently underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
