About us
We are seeking a Highways Chargehand with strong leadership and teamworking skills with extensive experience in laying tarmac and kerbs for schemes and / or large repair and maintenance works. You will join a highly active and diverse Highway Services Construction Team based out of our Highway Maintenance depot in Swinton.
The Highway Construction Service delivers the full range of highway maintenance functions across Salford hence you will be joining and leading a front line team working alongside other Chargehands, Highway Operatives, Street Lighting Operatives and Gully Crews. We are looking to expand by completing a larger programme of work with a wide variety of different sized jobs and schemes being programmed throughout the year.

About the Role
You will be based outdoors working fixed hours between 8am and 4pm delivering footway and highway scheme work but could also include pothole repairs, kerbing, drainage depending on demands of the service. You will be using up to date machinery and tools including rollers, breakers, and compactors. You will need to be able to plan work on a daily basis, assess and order materials, set up and remove traffic management systems in accordance with safety regulations, complete records and report defects using handheld devices if required, keep paperwork up to date and work collaboratively with the public, team members and supervisors to deliver high-quality schemes and services.
As part of this role you will be expected to drive 7.5T vehicles and be able to lead and work with a variety of different operatives depending on the nature of work required. You will be the representing the face of Salford which requires behaviours that demonstrate our values. Some weekend working and out-of-hours call out on a rota may also be required paid on an overtime basis.

About you
You will need extensive skills and experience in laying tarmac and kerbing for the delivery of high quality footway schemes and will have worked on a live highway and be fully conversant with Health and Safety requirements that this role needs. You will hold relevant NPORS / CSCS cards and have appropriate City and Guilds / NVQ training and qualifications relevant to this role. We're seeking someone who will not only fit seamlessly within the team but also display a commitment to continuous development and a dedication to working for the City Council.
Punctuality and attendance is key to ensuring the work that is required to be delivered on a daily basis can be undertaken effectively and efficiently with schemes being delivered to programme deadlines.
You will be required to lead, motivate, mentor, guide and supervise Highway Operatives and Apprentices within the team on a daily basis.
