Summary
This is an 8.5 PA less than full time consultant appointment for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, with a special interest in Lung cancers. There are currently no plans for the post to move to becoming full time but there may be this opportunity, subject to changes in workforce, in the future. This post provides cover for patients referred from Airedale General Hospital Foundation Trust, one of our WYATT partners, but the clinic is currently delivered remotely. There may be opportunity to change this to a face-to-face clinic if this is an individual preference, and if this could be accommodated. The post is therefore currently based within the Leeds Cancer Centre, Bexley Wing, St James University Hospital. The post has been designed with Tuesday as a non-working day on the basis that this matches service need. It would not be possible to change this in the present circumstances but should service needs change in the future, this could be negotiated. The post holder will provide non-surgical management, radiotherapy and SACT for patients with lung cancers. The successful candidate will work alongside the non-surgical Oncology Lung team led by Dr Pooja Bhatnagar (supported by Dr Kevin Franks, Dr Katy Clarke, Dr Peter Dickinson, Dr Mark Teo and Dr Alison Young). The Lung service receives approximately 963 new patient referrals per year for radiotherapy treatment. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will see approximately 126 new patients per year. The appointed consultant will prepare and supervise radiotherapy for their own patients. Consultant colleagues will cover radiotherapy tasks during periods of leave. As part of the Trusts resource commitment, the post holder will have access to secretarial assistance as required, and will be supplied with adequate office space and IT equipment to support fulfilling their job plan. The Bexley Wing is one of the largest oncology facilities in the UK, within one of the largest acute general hospitals in Europe. There are 350 beds, day-care and out-patient facilities and a patient hotel. The Bexley Wing incorporates services in non-surgical oncology, haematology, the Academic Unit clinical offices and support areas and substantial services in cancer surgery. There is a dedicated Clinical Research Facility for patients in early-phase clinical trials.
