Your new company
We are currently seeking a dedicated and empathetic SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming secondary school in Preston from September. This is an ongoing temporary role, offering the opportunity to support students across all age groups within the school. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping young people overcome barriers to learning and thrive both academically and personally.
Your new role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require additional emotional and behavioural support. Your responsibilities will include providing one-to-one and small group interventions, assisting in the classroom, and helping to implement individual education and behaviour plans. You'll collaborate with teaching staff and the pastoral team to create a safe, nurturing environment that promotes positive mental health and emotional wellbeing. You may also be involved in de-escalation strategies, mentoring, and liaising with external agencies where appropriate.
What you'll need to succeed
We are looking for someone with previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, ideally within a school or educational setting. You should have a calm, patient, and resilient approach, with the ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students. Excellent communication skills and a genuine passion for supporting young people are essential. A relevant qualification in education, youth work, or mental health support is desirable but not essential. An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role (support can be provided to obtain one if needed).
