Clinical Duties New patient health checks Smoking cessation Routine and 24-hour BP monitoring Simple wound care and dressings Removal clips/sutures BMI checks Urinalysis Venepuncture Assist in minor ops and coil clinics Ear syringing NHS and new patient health checks Preparation and processing of samples Administer B12, flu and pneumococcal vaccinations Carry out ECGs Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmers, delivering opportune health promotion where appropriate. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics and other agreed areas of care within scope of the role Carry out baseline observations, recording findings accurately Act as a chaperone as required Clerical duties Input of general data and clinical information onto electronic patients records Checking calibration due dates for medical equipment Stock taking and ordering supplies of clinical/medical equipment Restocking of clinical rooms as required Dealing with telephone enquiries as appropriate Referral of patients to other medical or administrative personnel and voluntary agencies when appropriate Preparation of equipment for testing and servicing Source and maintain relevant information leaflets and literature for patient displays General Duties Manage own workload effectively within the practice clinic times Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session Work as an integral part of the practice nursing team Assist clinicians to provide a high standard of care for the practice population within the scope of practice policies, procedures and guidelines. Provide care which meets QOF targets and other contractual obligations Attend relevant clinical educational meetings as required Comply at all times with relevant legislation, policy and procedure Quality: Provide care which reflects the practice mission: Best Care, Best Place, Best Time, Strive to develop the Practice and maintain quality at all times Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients needs Effectively manage own time, workload and resources Make effective use of training to update knowledge and skills Participate in audit where appropriate Communication: Communicate effectively with all stakeholders, complying with confidentiality and data protection legislation Recognise peoples needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly Explain clinical procedures to patients clearly in order to obtain informed consent Document written and electronic information accurately and professionally Health & Safety: Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of treatment rooms Ensure clinical fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with relevant guidance Assist in promoting and maintaining own and others health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy and related documents Use personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines Follow safe Lone Working procedures Identify risks involved with work activities and work in a manner to safely manage these Use appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards Participate and comply with training around key aspects of the role, i.e., management of sharps, spillages, etc. Equality and Diversity: Support the equality, diversity and rights of patients and other stakeholders Act in a way that recognizes the importance of peoples rights, interpreting them in a way that is consistent with Practice procedures and policies and current legislation Respect the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients and other stakeholders Behave in a manner which is welcoming to and of the individual, is non-judgmental and respects their circumstances, feelings priorities and rights Personal/Professional Development: Participate in any training identified by the Practice Participate in regular supervisions and an annual appraisal Take responsibility for own development, learning and performance and maintaining any records associated with this Assist in the evaluation of current practice and service provision by participating in the collection of data, clinical audit and user satisfaction surveys Demonstrate skills and activities to others undertaking similar work, acting as a role model Assist in the induction of new staff members Recognise the limitations of own scope of knowledge and practice and be aware of when to refer to senior member of staff Other Duties and Responsibilities In line with practice changes and service demands, Health Care Assistants are expected to demonstrate a flexible approach to working practices and may be asked to assume other responsibilities consistent with their level of competence in order to meet service needs.
