What will the successful candidate be doing?

UKStratCom is the Capability Sponsor for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) in Defence and is charged with implementing the PNT system of systems approach in support of Defence needs and wider government requirements. This role is responsible for the capability development of the PNT programmes and is part of the Space Capability Planning Group (CPG) within UKStratCom's C4ISTAR branch in the Integrated Capability Directorate.

In this role you will support the Head of Capability (HoC) C4ISTAR’s Sponsorship of cross-cutting Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) capabilities for Defence by managing the development of future PNT capability, acting as sponsor for PNT capability requirements through life, and gaining approval for the initiation of PNT capability delivery programmes.

PNT is one of the key ‘invisible enablers’ that underpins almost all Defence capability - our forces need to know where they are, and what the time is, in order to deliver their advanced capabilities and achieve mission success. Within Defence, a key source of PNT information is the US Global Positioning System (GPS), which is increasingly recognised to be vulnerable to deliberate or inadvertent interference, and Defence also utilises other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). As the lead official working in this area you will play a critical role in helping Defence to better understand the vulnerabilities and risks associated with all sources of PNT information, including but not limited to GPS and GNSS. You will be at the heart of Defence’s efforts to develop capabilities to mitigate these risks and vulnerabilities, and to provide PNT as a key enabler for the armed forces of the future.

You will work closely with colleagues across Defence including the front line commands, world-leading scientists and engineers in Dstl, and across government, including in the National PNT Office in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and other partners across government. A vital part of your role will be engagement with our allies, and you can expect to represent to the UK Strategic Command position at major international meetings of the Five Eyes and NATO.

Remote working within this role is something that can be discussed at interview stages or with your future line manager if you are found successful.
