The Orkney World Heritage Site Programme, part of the Islands Growth Deal a ten year programme funded by UK and Scottish Governments, is focused on protecting and celebrating the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. It delivers both large-scale and incremental improvements to ensure the site remains accessible, resilient, and relevant. The programme blends heritage, regeneration, and innovation, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable development rooted in Orkney’s rich cultural legacy

We are seeking a Project Officer to join our team and support the delivery of projects and initiatives that form part of the Programme. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to transformational and incremental improvements that will shape the future of Orkney’s heritage landscape. The programme is led by Orkney Islands Council in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

As Project Officer, you will be based in Orkney Islands Council and report into and work closely with the Programme Manager and also other Project Officers and staff based within the partner organisations to help coordinate projects, engage stakeholders, and support the development of systems and processes that underpin the programme.

You will be involved in:

• Coordinating project activities and maintaining project documentation

• Supporting stakeholder engagement and public participation

• Contributing to funding applications and reporting

• Undertaking research and analysis to inform project development

• Organising meetings, workshops and public events

• Supporting the delivery of project outputs and improvements

You will bring strong communication and organisational skills, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for heritage, sustainability and community engagement. Experience in project support, report writing, stakeholder engagement and research is essential. Familiarity with project management tools and techniques is desirable.

This role offers the chance to work at the intersection of heritage, regeneration and innovation, contributing to a programme that is locally rooted and internationally significant.

You will be based at the Council Offices in Kirkwall, with flexible working arrangements available.

Applicants must hold a qualification at SCQF level 8/9 i.e. SVQ4, HND, General Degree, Higher Apprenticeship, Technical Apprenticeship or have a minimum of 5 years previous relevant experience, as detailed in the experience section of the person specification.

Applicants must also hold a qualification or certification in project management, or be willing to work towards this.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.

This post requires Level 1 Disclosure Scotland Clearance.
