Project Engineer Signalling
Location: North West, UK
Contract Type: Contract (Outside IR35)
Industry: Rail
Summary
We are seeking a skilled Project Engineer specialising in Signalling to join a dynamic rail infrastructure project on a contract basis (outside scope of IR35) based in the North West. The successful candidate will lead the integration and coordination of signalling works with other disciplines such as Track, Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), and Lineside Civils, ensuring seamless handovers and asset management. You will be responsible for managing the interface between signalling design, installation, and testing, as well as supporting disciplines including Networks, Control Systems, and Telecoms, to maintain delivery schedules and meet project requirements.
Key responsibilities include developing and managing cable route strategies, conducting site surveillance and safety tours, liaising with maintainers to update AMP and Ellipse information, leading stage work packages, and formulating recovery strategies.
While previous construction or signalling installation experience is advantageous, it is not essential. The role demands strong project engineering capabilities, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, safe, and compliant signalling projects.
Skills
• Signalling project engineering and integration
• Multi-disciplinary coordination (Track, OLE, Civils)
• Signalling design, installation, and testing interface management
• Cable route strategy development and management
• Site surveillance and safety compliance
• Maintainer liaison and asset management systems (AMP, Ellipse)
• Stagework package leadership
• Recovery strategy formulation
• Driver training package development
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
Certifications & Standards
• Relevant technical qualifications (HNC/HND or equivalent) desirable
• Knowledge of Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations
• Awareness of railway safety and quality assurance standards
• Understanding of signalling engineering standards and best practices
• COSS Competency
• IRSE Licence (Engineering Manager Projects)
This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to significant rail signalling projects in the North West, working outside IR35 on a contract basis.
