We are seeking an exceptional Head of English to lead our dynamic English department in Essex. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and visionary teacher to inspire staff and students, fostering a culture of high achievement and a love for literature and language.
As Head of English, you will set the strategic direction for the department, ensuring excellence in teaching and learning across all key stages. You'll be responsible for curriculum development, staff coaching and mentoring, assessment oversight, and promoting innovation in lesson delivery. The successful candidate will be a role model for both students and colleagues, bringing creativity, rigour, and ambition to every aspect of the role.

Key Responsibilities•
Lead, manage, and inspire the English department to achieve outstanding outcomes
•
Oversee curriculum planning and delivery across all key stages
•
Monitor teaching standards, providing feedback and professional development support
•
Analyse assessment data to drive improvement strategies
•
Foster a culture of reading and a passion for English across the school
•
Ensure high standards of behaviour and engagement in lessons
•
Collaborate with senior leadership to align departmental goals with whole-school strategy
•
Manage departmental resources effectively
Qualifications and Experience
•
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and degree in English or related subject
•
Proven success in teaching English at secondary level, with strong exam results
•
Previous middle or senior leadership experience in a school setting
•
Excellent knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy in English
•
Strong communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
•
Ability to inspire and develop colleagues
•
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
