FTS Directorate vision is that road transport is safer, better, cleaner and fairer. The Directorate has policy responsibility for self-driving vehicles, road safety, improving roadside air quality, and environmental and safety standards for vehicles. We also sponsor the three motoring agencies (DVLA, DVSA and VCA) that deliver services that are used by every motorist in the country such as issuing driving licenses, running driving tests, and approving new vehicles.

The post holder will be responsible for the effective management of FTS’s correspondence with Members of Parliament and the public, which is seen by Ministers and senior officials as work of great importance and a core service that the department provides to MPs and the public. The post holder will manage high-quality correspondence processes, including drafting responses, coordinating timely and accurate contributions from policy leads, supporting colleagues to improve their drafting skills, and providing regular reporting on correspondence performance to senior leadership.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Drafting of replies to all routine correspondence using standard lines with direct support being provided by senior officers for more complex correspondence.
  • Ensuring the directorate maintains excellent correspondence statistics, supporting colleagues to meet deadlines. This includes liaising with other teams/departments for contributions.
  • Ensuring best practice and knowledge of correspondence processes is shared throughout the directorate, including delivering teach-in sessions and helping senior officers with using the ‘Respond’ system more efficiently.
  • Acting as first point of contact on all correspondence matters, drafting responses to correspondence where standard lines are available.
  • Liaising with colleagues in FTS, DfT and other government departments to provide timely and accurate contributions to correspondence as necessary.
