We have an exciting opportunity to work as the Veterinary Advisor for International Trade in the Centre for International Trade (CIT) team.

As a Veterinary Advisor for International Trade, you will have the responsibility to lead, manage and advise the International veterinary team (IVT) as well as wider CIT and APHA teams in matters related to import and export.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and manage the International Veterinary Team, providing strategic and operational oversight, ensuring quality delivery, visible leadership, and effective HR support.
  • Provide expert veterinary advice on international trade to IVT, APHA teams, DEFRA policy units, and the Chief Veterinary Officer, supporting the development and implementation of trade-related policy.
  • Providing veterinary support to the Veterinary Head of Border Control in the development and implementation of new policies related to the EU Border Control Posts and, facilitation of new trade partnerships.
  • Driving team direction, offering expert advice, and supporting professional development.
  • Promoting a 'one team' culture and cross-training, ensuring delivery of trade-related activities aligned with policy and performance targets.
  • Collaborating with the Veterinary Advisor for Border Control Posts to address GB and international border issues.
  • Sharing best practices across the agency, working closely with peers and managers for consistent operations.
  • Working with senior leadership to improve efficiency, resilience, and value for money.
  • Supporting business continuity and disease outbreak response.
  • Leading the Border Control Knowledge Forum alongside the Veterinary Head of Border Control.
  • Leading quality assurance of APHA certification work.
  • Ensuring proper advice is given to traders.
  • Influencing DEFRA prioritisation to benefit GB traders while safeguarding biosecurity.
  • Representing CIT and APHA at stakeholder events, ensuring feedback is shared internally.
  • Developing crisis response processes to protect national biosecurity and animal health.
