Summary

The Online Tests and Assessments (OTA) service currently provides psychometric tests for recruitment across the Civil Service. In 2021-22, over 1 million online tests were completed on the OTA service for roles across the Civil Service. The use of tests has consistently grown year-on-year alongside the range of tests we can offer. The next phase is to replace and expand the current digital service to provide tests and assessments beyond recruitment, such as for learning and development.

As a Content Designer in OTA, you will have the opportunity to help with test content creation including questions, items, user flows, as well as the guidance needed to enable users to take tests. It is an exciting area of work that touches on learning, skills measurement and occupational psychology.

Team: The service is a multidisciplinary team, which includes digital specialists, Occupational Psychologists and Psychometricians.

Our digital roles are made up of Product Manager, Delivery manager, User Researcher, Business Analyst and Content Designer (this role). The team is supported by a wider community of practice for each role.

The psychology roles are made up of occupational psychologists, psychometricians and administrative support.

We are looking for a Content / UX Designer to join Government Business Services (GBS) within the Cabinet Office, to help develop our Online Tests and Assessments offering within the wider recruitment service.

We follow the DDAT job description model for Content Designer and Interaction Designer.

Content designers make things easier for people to understand and use by creating an accessible service, which is easy enough for everyone to use.

We are looking for people who are passionate about words and structuring information and guidance. The ideal Candidate should understand how clear and simple content can help Users in every step of the journey. You should be able to advocate the value of good content to your product team and stakeholders, as well as back up your decisions with evidence based on User feedback and User testing.

Responsibilities

  • User-centred content design. You will support the design of content to meet user needs and make complex language and processes easy to understand. You are aware of government accessibility requirements and can design content that works with common assistive technologies;
  • UX Design. Work with a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to turn concepts into user-centred designs. Understand as-is interaction design and identify improvement opportunities. Apply your knowledge of interaction design practices to create better user experiences;
  • Evidence based practice. Use different types of data (including analytics, User feedback, User research and usability testing) to inform and explain your design decisions;
  • User focus. Understand the range of different users who might access content and services and can identify their needs based on evidence. Ability to translate User stories into content that meets users’ needs and propose suitable design approaches;
  • Agile working. Good working knowledge of Agile methodology and ability to apply agile mindset to delivery;
  • Content/design concepts and prototyping. Ability to choose the best option to make content understandable to different audiences and to demonstrate a proposed approach to content changes or improvements;
  • Stakeholder relationship management. Ability to communicate clearly and regularly with stakeholders at different levels. You can tailor communication to their needs and work with them to build relationships while also meeting User needs;
  • Strategic thinking. You can contribute to content strategies and policies, and can help create content patterns or standards.
