Crynodeb

The Emergency Department is its own Directorate within Division Two. The Directorate is represented on the Divisional Management Board by the Clinical Director of Acute Services. The Directorate is managed by the Clinical Director, the Clinical Lead, Matron and the Directorate Manager. Directorate Meetings are held weekly which are attended by the above mentioned and the senior medical staff (Consultants and Associate Specialists) and the EM Sisters. The Directorate is responsible for its delivery of clinical care and its budget through the management of its staff and resources. The Emergency Department moved to its current site at New Cross Hospital in January 1996. Its catchment area includes Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire and East Shropshire and consequently it has a varied workload from urban and rural areas as well as a multi-cultural one. Its sees approximately 108,000 new patients a year of which approximately 26% are children under 16 years of age. It is a designated Major Accident Unit and is the 5th largest department in the West Midlands Health Region. With the development of the Trauma Network & the Major Trauma Centres, New Cross Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Unit.
