Job Overview
-We're on the hunt for a proactive and creative Communications Assistant to join our fast-paced, forward-thinking communication team — and this is your chance to be part of it.
Based at MOD Lyneham, in this exciting role, you'll help shape the voice of The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME). Alongside the Communications Manager, you'll assist with day-to-day communications, press and PR— driving awareness, protecting reputation, and making sure our message cuts through loud and clear. If you're passionate about storytelling, media engagement, and making a real impact, this is the role you've been waiting for.
Main Duties
-As our Communications Assistant, you'll assist in developing and executing standout communication strategies that shine a spotlight on our three units — 8 Training Battalion REME, The REME Arms School and No 4 School of Technical Training.
-You'll be hands-on with crafting compelling content, while building strong relationships across DSEME, the Defence College of Technical Training and wider Defence.
-You'll play a key role in our corporate and internal communications, supporting announcements and initiatives, policy updates, and helping navigate crisis communications when needed — always ensuring consistency in tone and MOD brand.
-Working closely with the Mitie Communications Manager and our three units, you'll bring communications flair to multi-channel campaigns - your words will help highlight the breadth and depth of our training delivery.
-You'll also track media coverage and sentiment, turning insights into smart recommendations, and seek out high-impact opportunities like innovation, awards, sporting achievements, and leadership to raise the profile of each of our units and personnel.
-Assist the Communications Manager with coordination for visits, both internal and external. Liaising with Media/Photographers/MT, Mess etc as required.
-Undertaking any other tasks as determined by the Communications Manager, including promoting a safe working environment, and support/cover for other personnel.
What we are looking for
-We're looking for a natural storyteller with experience in PR, media relations, or communications — you know how to make content that matters.
-You thrive on turning complex ideas into powerful, engaging narratives.
-Your writing is sharp, your judgement is spot-on, and you know how to navigate reputational risks with confidence and clarity.
-You're proactive, hands-on, and thrive in fast-paced environments where juggling multiple projects is just part of the fun.
-If you bring experience from the Defence sector, that's a huge plus — but above all, you're driven by purpose, hungry to make a difference, and ready to amplify the reputation of the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
