Summary
There will be 12-14 programmed activities involving at least 2 outpatient sessions, 3 operating sessions One Programmed Activity per week is allocated for x-ray meetings and multidisciplinary meetings, PA for ward rounds and 0.5 PA per week is allocated for direct clinical care administrative activity. Finally, typically, up to 1 programmed activity is allocated for continuing professional development and activities such as clinical audit, postgraduate medical education and teaching. With on call and prospective cover this comes to 12-14 PAs. Where possible a regular timetable will be established, however the nature of the post requires the post holder to be flexible in order to maximise theatre and clinic capacity. An example of a consultant weekly job plan: Monday Tues Weds Thus Fri am Clinic OR OR MDT Clinic pm Endo OR OR Clinic SPA Emergency Duties This is on a basis of 1:9 ROTA with 3 trainee middle grades and 5 other specialty Surgeons Emergency on-call duties in general surgery are undertaken by a team consisting of a consultant supported by one FY1 and one ST/ SpR / Specialty surgeon. The consultant emergency duties are carried out in a block of several days on call during which most elective commitments are cancelled. However, owing to the nature of cancer referrals, flexibility will be expected in providing cover for new and follow up patients during the Consultants on-call week. The emphasis is on a team approach to ensure optimal patient care whilst ensuring educational time for junior staff within normal working hours. Urology services are provided by urology team, but during night or weekend on call the General surgery Middle grade provide support to urology consultant on call. Vascular emergencies are networked with Addenbrookes and all in-patient care for these patients is by transfer to Addenbrookes. There is a separate vascular rota provided by the vascular surgeons at Addenbrookes, providing specialist vascular consultant cover at all times The appointee will share in emergency on-call duties with his or her colleagues in a 1 in 9 rota with prospective cover for both annual and study leave. The timetable will be agreed at the start of the post for theatre and clinic sessions and the post holder will be expected to work flexibly according to demand.
