Family in the Cramlington area are looking to recruit for their energetic nine-year-old boy to enable and support him to access age-appropriate leisure activities in the local community, as well as give his parents some respite. He has a diagnosis of (ASD) autism spectrum disorder.

The family are looking for an experienced carer who can support and understand that it will be necessary to take a person-centred approach to all activities this young boy chooses to engage in. This will require a special set of skills as this young boy can be and is classed as a vulnerable child who needs an appropriate adult to keep him safe and to make correct choices when interacting with others so therefore gaining his trust is a priority.

The young boy is into gaming and enjoys playing tag, bowling going to the park, beach and going for walks and drives and he likes music, singing songs, dancing, playing etc and loves numbers (Maths).

Main Duties: You will be required to anticipate the child’s needs as he has limited awareness of danger and a complex sensory profile that needs to be managed using a sensory diet. Support with prompts to keep hydrated. Provide support with personal care and toileting, social stimulation and progressive levels of activity, he is a Gestalt Language Processor. To support and build up confidence. Acting as a 'support buddy', encouraging his interests which include the above a plan will need to be adhered to and developed between both the family and the support buddy. Positive reinforcement is a must as although the young boy needs to be out in the community, he will need a great deal of encouragement and patience to encourage this. Assist the child to build relationships with peers within his wider community. He does not like overcrowded or loud noisy places

He will require someone 6 hours a week but he will initially need to be seen in the home so he can gain confidence in developing a relationship. Time may also be used at the family home to watch favourite movies, play games etc.

Personal specification:

· Full driving licence and access to own car essential· Experience in health & social care desirable· Have at least 12 months experience working with children who have disabilities· Have a genuine interest in working with children with complex needs· Calm, patient and understanding· Have a happy positive caring nature with an understanding towards children with disabilities.· Ability to both take instructions and use own initiative.· Respect confidentiality· Punctual, honest, reliable with a caring nature as the child cannot be left unsupervised.

Further Information: An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS) will have to be obtained for the successful candidate (at employer’s expense).

Training: Where it is required, such as in Health and Safety matters, practical training and guidance will be arranged, and the care worker will be expected to attend. This will include moving and handling, medication awareness and additional training specific to the client
Rate of Pay: £13.74 per hour
Breakdown Hours: Hours of work: 6 hours a week.
