Predominantly remote with some requirement to attend the offices in Cardiff.



The role:

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Lead User Researcher to join the team to support the delivery of GP services and related user-centred design activities.

This role is central to ensuring that digital products and services are designed with users at the heart of the process.

As a Lead User Researcher, you will provide strategic oversight, champion user-centred design, and lead on high-impact research activities that inform service and policy decisions across the wider directorate.



Key Responsibilities:

Lead, mentor, and support user researchers across the organisation
Deliver core training programmes in user research for the wider team
Champion user research methodologies and continuously challenge and improve team practices
Act as an expert voice for user-centred design and gain organisational buy-in
Design, plan, and deliver complex user research activities across multiple projects
Select and advocate for appropriate research methods aligned with service goals
Lead the development and adoption of innovative and inclusive research approaches
Identify and implement service or policy improvements that benefit the wider organisation
Collect and analyse behavioural and attitudinal data to inform design decisions
Synthesize research findings into clear, actionable insights and communicate them effectively to stakeholders
Assure research quality and critique others’ work to promote best practice
Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure user research informs design outcomes
Communicate research findings clearly and sensitively to both technical and non-technical audiences
Advocate for inclusivity and accessibility in research and service design
Collaborate with digital professionals, including developers, designers, and analysts, to build evidence-based digital solutions
Demonstrate a sound understanding of technologies underpinning NHS digital services
Plan and execute user testing using professional judgement in complex contexts
Ensure research activities provide value for money
Monitor and report on research budgets and resource allocation
Identify cost-effective tools, suppliers, and frameworks to support delivery



What the client is looking for:

Master’s degree or equivalent experience
Practical expertise across a range of professional procedures and practices
Proven track record as a user researcher, leading complex projects and shaping service propositions through insightful research
Skilled at aligning user research with broader service goals and delivering actionable insights
Proficient in iterative design and research methodologies, with a strong understanding of how to balance human, machine, and organisational roles in IT systems.
Experienced in designing intuitive, accessible user interfaces across platforms and devices, with a focus on usability and ergonomics.
Adept at delivering clear, engaging presentations—online and in person—to diverse audiences and stakeholders
Strong analytical mindset: identifies information gaps and develops strategies to address them
High attention to detail: ensures accuracy and completeness in all deliverables
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: builds strong relationships and adapts style to suit different audiences and cultural contexts
Team player: works collaboratively to achieve shared goals
Agile and adaptable: quick to adjust approach based on evolving needs and environments
