The Environment Agency’s Monitoring Laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC17025 and include 3 sites across the country – Leeds, Brampton and Starcross. This role is based at our Starcross site, which specialises in freshwater, saline and effluent analysis, - delivering core analytical work in parallel with investigational/project work for the EA and other government and commercial customers.
Working closely with the Low-Level Screens Technical Specialist You will provide technical leadership/support to a team of skilled analysts by using your extensive knowledge of the techniques involved in the analysis of Organic compounds, particularly via Screening techniques. You should also have an in-depth knowledge of key Organic environmental contaminants and their potential impact.
You will be required to:
Interpret scientific data and provide technical advice to both internal and external customers.
Investigate and find solutions to sometimes complex problems.
Implement improvements to existing methodologies
Work alongside the Technical Specialist on any future developments within the Screens Team.
A key part of the Scientist role will be supporting the Team Leader/Technical Specialist with the development of the team in a variety of ways but particularly through mentoring. You will be required to form close working relationships with less experienced members of the team and provide opportunities for them to learn and build their knowledge, ensuring that the relevant skills within the section are maintained.
The team
You will be part of the National Monitoring – Monitoring Laboratories, providing analytical services to both the Environment Agency and a variety of external customers. Our Organic team at Starcross currently comprises of 23 staff members and is responsible for a wide range of organic analytical methods that are essential in supporting the Environment Agency’s aims and objectives.
Experience/skills required
You will be based in our Organic Screens area, therefore an excellent working knowledge and experience in LCMS and GCMS screening techniques is essential.
Experience in the operation of QTOF systems is also key.
You will be able to demonstrate your technical knowledge that will enable you to supervise and lead others through training and mentoring. You will have a proven track record of successfully sharing this knowledge.
