Responsibilities Research Responsibilities o Collaborating with the principal investigators and junior research fellows in the provision of research MR studies. o Train staff to the level of scanner operator, whether that is for scanning participants or phantom and maintain training records of all scanner operators. o Teaching magnet safety to visiting staff, ensuring a safe working environment for staff, patients and participants. o Dealing with safety queries which may preclude participants from safely participating in MRI research. o To be responsible in the use of expensive imaging equipment to ensure that all persons remain safe from the physical hazards associated with high-strength magnets. o Dealing with the routine maintenance and service of the MRI scanners and ancillary equipment. o Run quality assurance scans on the scanners and ancillary equipment within the department, reporting any issues to the relevant authority. Send phantom QA data to the image analysis centre at the appropriate time points specified within their protocol. o To contribute to the review and propose changes to departmental protocols, procedures and SOPs (standard operating procedures) o Creating user guides (under lead radiographer supervision) o Assist with writing equipment protocols (under lead radiographer supervision) o Write risk assessments (under lead radiographer supervision) o Have detailed knowledge of physics and processing workflow o Be competent in managing difficult situations that occur around the MR scanners and show initiative in problem solving (e.g., challenging behaviour, disregard for MRI safety and adverse clinical events). o Work with researchers on protocol development, optimising their protocol concerning the different sequences and MRI scanners within the department. Optimising the workflow of the protocol. o We expect and require a high degree of attention to detail in our staff, the data acquired should be appraised for quality and consistency, particularly for multi-visit projects. o Participate in multicentre trials, paying close attention to scanning in accordance with the scanning manual and training provided. o To maintain good clinical practice (GCP) training and complete specific project training in a timely manner. o Undertake all statutory and mandatory training as required for the trust and university. o Uploading of research data to the relevant Image Analysis Centre. Clinical Responsibilities o Support the day-to-day running of the clinical cardiac MRI service alongside the NHS staff. Liaising with the lead/deputy radiographer, HCAs, Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) consultants, registrars/clinical fellows and the clinical CMR administrator in providing the clinical service. o To independently assess each patient and adapt techniques according to the needs of the patient o Update patient information sheets and patient letters, in line with current protocols. o Manage patients and participants in the department with acute cardiac problems with particular emphasis on patient safety and monitoring. o Liaise with the referring ward/hospital and the responsible clinicians team where necessary o Treat all patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity to provide a caring and confidential service The post will involve: o Frequent use of VDU equipment daily o Positioning and manoeuvring of patients and equipment daily. In any clinical situation, patients may be ambulant, in a wheelchair, or occasionally in a stretcher/bed. Assisting patients with transfer to the scanner table is sometimes required. Movement of wheelchairs, stretcher/bed over short distances is occasionally required. o Ensuring appropriate infection control procedures are followed. o Performing intravenous contrast agent injections when required, subject to satisfactory completion of a recognised course of training o Administration of pharmacological stress and contrast agents during CMR scans, as prescribed by the CMR consultants or research protocol. o Provision of information and advice to patients about appointments, dealing with patient queries in person and by telephone; exercising judgement when dealing with patient enquiries; analyse and resolve patient problems. o Provide highly specialised advice and information to other healthcare professionals on the management of patients considered for MR scanning. o Receive visitors/patients/volunteers to OCMR and ensuring safety requirements are met. o The post will include involvement in the scanning of clinical research participants. There may be further opportunity for active involvement in the non-imaging aspects of research. Database management and image analysis o Perform post-processing of image data, following suitable training. o Perform database management of MR systems, satellite console and remote workstation to ensure smooth workflow. o Responsible for image archiving using the departmental archive system; appropriate training will be provided Safety and quality control o Communicating changes in procedure to scanner operators and service users o Communicating changes in safety policy and procedure to scanner operators and service users o Oversee the maintenance and safe use of imaging and other equipment used in the MRI department. Ensure that daily, weekly and monthly QA tests are completed and report faults to the local physics team or manufacturer as appropriate. o Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers for the maintenance and procurement of equipment o Undertake implant risk assessments o Advising on safety policy, producing and updating OCMR safety documentation and guidelines o Liaising with external companies/manufacturers to obtain the most up-to-date and relevant MRI safety information (e.g. Pacemakers, ICDs etc) o The post holder will be aware of the Safety Guidelines for Magnetic Resonance o Imaging Equipment in Clinical Use 2021 o The post holder will be competent in hospital life support skills and familiar with advanced cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques o Responsible for the safety and well-being of patients whilst in the unit, including physiological monitoring where necessary o Be up to date with the guidelines for the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents and be able to assess patients for suitability for gadolinium-based contrast agents o Be up to date with the current safety guidelines with respect to the general MR environment and the specialised problems associated with implants and devices associated with cardiovascular imaging. o Adhere to all Trust policies including Health & Safety Regulations, COSHH Regulations, and the Data Protection Act. o Adhere to safe systems of work with regard to manual handling and infection control. Outreach o Building relationships with other professionals, including OH and OUH clinicians (cardiologists, radiologists, neurologists, nurses, other radiographers and healthcare professionals) o To represent the department at conferences, both nationally and internationally. General Responsibilities o Hold an honorary contract with the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust o Participate in the Department and Directorate Audit and Clinical Governance Programs. o Have a flexible approach to working hours. o Report all absences in accordance with University and Departmental policy. o Will be asked to show flexibility should the need arise in covering for other personnel when on leave/sickness etc. o Must at all times respect the confidentiality of all electronically stored information and written data, particularly where it relates to patients in line with the Data Protection Act and Patient Confidentiality policies. o Is required at all times to carry out their individual responsibilities with due regard to the Trust Equal Opportunities and to take reasonable care of his/her own health and safety and that of any other person(s) who may be affected by his/her acts of omission. o Undertake any reasonable further duties as required when requested by the Head of Imaging Applications Professional o The post holder is responsible for his/her personal development and is expected to remain up to date in technical developments and trends in imaging through participation in internal and external development opportunities and to maintain a portfolio of evidence in support of CPD undertaken. o The post holder will be encouraged to seek out innovative practices both in Oxford and elsewhere, and be involved with developing best practice within the department. o Contribute to the review and propose changes to departmental protocols and procedures. o To attend group and staff meetings. o Exercise professional accountability at all times and to be aware of their own development needs/limitations and actively seek to address these areas where necessary. o Be appraised as part of the annual appraisal process.
